Big dreams? Protect them!

Zareef Minty: Big Dreams? Protect It!

If you have big dreams, you have to protect them. If you have big goals, you have to do whatever it takes to achieve them. I have seen too many people with potential and amazing qualities give up on their dreams simply because someone told them to. This is always a strange thing for me to think about because when you consider who this negative person is, it will always be someone who couldn’t achieve the exact same thing that was in question- their dreams.

I get told almost daily that I shouldn’t do something or I am wasting my time on something in particular, or most ironically, that I will fail at it if I try. All I can say is that no one knows your ambitions and feels your drive like you do. Nobody understands how important your goals and dreams are to you and your circumstances, so no one should stand in your way of what you really want. The biggest problem here isn’t the negativity one receives but rather the lack of self-confidence. We are such a talented bunch of people with unlimited potential yet we are cutting ourselves short. I guessed this would probably be the best time to write about this seeing as everyone is currently busy with examinations and are feeling uncertain about numerous things. All those goals and dreams you had before, keep them, protect them, hold them close to you and don’t ever stop working until you achieve them.

They say your circle makes the biggest difference and that the people you surround yourself with determines who you are. I guess I am just really lucky, as every single morning a really good friend of mine will send me paragraphs of the book called The Secret, and to be quite honest, I really thought nothing of The Secret at first until I started reading it. Magnetic attraction, that’s what it is all about. If you want to do really well in an examination or if you want to get promoted within your company, it is really simple- just adjust your mind-set, make sure your mind-set is such that it expects you to get an 80% for that examination or become an associate at say, a law firm.  It really is all about positivity, having a great mind-set and self-confidence.

I remember reading the quote “Whether you think you can or think you can’t…You’re right.” Believe in yourself and your dreams. Let this decide your future. Thinking back to a week ago, I received a Facebook message from a junior at my High School who was actually one of the Grade 8’s we took for orientation when I was in matric. He told me that he just wants to thank me for teaching him a lesson he couldn’t learn from a book. Curious to know what this lesson was, I asked and he replied that he stood next to me when I told my fellow matriculates what I would like to achieve by the age of 24 and they laughed and said it is impossible. This is the part that got me- he told me that he wants to study law as well and that he wants to become everything I am and more. That mentality is what I want everyone to adopt. Believe in yourself and your abilities; take someone that inspires you and do more than that person has done. Also promise yourself that one day you will help someone who aspires to be you. Our aim in life shouldn’t be based on personal enrichment, no, this shouldn’t be our main aim, it should be to help people and inspire people through our success so that they can do the same for the next person.

So if you feel defeated or if your goals seem too big to achieve just sit down and remember why you made that goal and why you kept trying for so long. Imagine how it would feel achieving that goal and keep that feeling with you until the day you actually achieve it. Thereafter, throw that feeling away and move towards your next goal. We are Nelson’s rainbow nation; we are the generation that will take this country forward.

I am going to conclude this article with a quote from one of the most inspiring movies I have ever watched in my life.  “Don’t ever let someone tell you, you can’t do something. You got a dream, you got to protect it. People can’t do something themselves, they want to tell you that you can’t do it. You want something, go get it. Period“– Chris Gardner (The Pursuit of Happiness)
