Black agency watch: Africa's place in world just got trumped!

2016-11-13 09:55

I have considered writing Africa a love letter for a long time and I have never amassed the courage to keep it real with her. I have thus lamented publicly her torment and have wailed at her prospects. I have stood at the side lines and have wondered where was her agency and where was her renaissance. I have considered a world where Africa existed on her own and she was not affected or influenced by all that define her reality today.

Enter South Africa

I was born to one of her own and inherited her greatest treasure in South Africa. Her treasure was a philosophical view of Africa's significance in the world. Pixley Ka Isaka Seme (1882–1951) summerised this school of thought in the quote below:

"The regeneration of Africa means that a new and unique civilization is soon to be added to the world."

The beginning of the ANC as a movement and the beginning of the oldest progressive movement in the land was best understood as an idea of Africa's regeneration. For in her regeneration, Africa will have agency in how the story of humanity is told. For since colonial rule over Africa, her journey had made her people remain at margins of influence and they have remained there while other ideas have imposed the central role of her narrative.

Her leaders have been declared corrupt and they have oblidged the title by remaining trapped in the bad press. This being an indictment on the history of a people that has had a long bouquet of great leaders. This  is best reflected in how seven years of Jacob Zuma, presidency is now defining for the entire 22 years of freedom in South Africa. We have forgotten a period of prosperity that defined Mbeki's tenure in office where 1% in GDP growth resulted in 0.7% growth in employment.

What's particularly concerning is how the current imbalance is not cause for concern, where we losing 0.2% of jobs for  1% economic growth. Instead we have found many  new enemies to blame but a black leadership that failes to achieve the levels of their immediate predecessors. Africa where is  your agency?

Business has told her people that they are not competent and cannot not lead commerce. Against such a mirror that has created an  exclusion of entire people out of a section of the economy,  how does  her people manage to fall into the incompetency trap? To the extend that those that have proven ability are undone by shady business dealings. Minus the contribution of Brain Molefe to black agency, despite how telling it was.

Then her greatest insult is from a globe that has gone out of its way to tell her people: how backwards they are! How lazy they! And how unprogressive they remain! Unfortunate but telling reality of her people today.

Enter the news today!

I get it that the ANC can't allow for a second for an external process to determine for them who gets to lead them. I get that they can't allow a precedence they created with Mbeki to become a political norm, despite all inferred contrast between him and Zuma. I also get it that politically it would be suicide for them not to draw politcal lines in parliament. However, do all black people who are worried about black agency a favour and be clear on this one:

What is the future of South Africa and what is object of the current leadership or united front as we called it in the 80s? Especially if we going to blame white capital and foreign interest for all wrongs in society!

Who is going to take over from here? Let's not pretend from your history that we had no mobilisers and community unifiers like Dr Xuma and Dr Luthuli who understood the impportance of the ground. There is no standout people's champion in the movement now, and there again those on the sidelines should live in hope absent of progressive evidence.

Then when the core fails like the alliences have raised counter movements in the past week. Where is that OR Tambo figure to hold the core together and to assure the movement a future against current turmoil. Take away sentiment, the movement has no voice holding it together other.

Then enter Trump and the possible end of AGOA. Just for perspective most average economies our size have a manufacturing sector that contributes around 20% to their GDP, our history in the early 90s was a manufacturing sector contributing around 22%. Today it sits at 11% and this is with a trade treaty that allows free trade of manufactured products into the world's biggest market. Imagine losing that too and how adverse it will be to the economy. Sorry Bro. Zakes Mda for Africa it matters which policies govern the US and our leaders should seek similar cooperation they had under Bush and Obama with Trump.

Then there is the false position that has been preached that we need to be more BRICS focused, oh what a failure on diplomacy that would be as we are the only member country with access to the US in BRICS, it's our leverage.

Black ANC remains in power and the power to make a difference remains in their hand today and maybe with time it will change. However until then, please someone be Inspired to lift our politics beyond GuptaGate
