Black Friday: The Day of Many Messages

2016-11-25 09:09

All legends have a basis in historical facts. All major holidays have legends around them, which helps us understand the complexity of these days that we celebrate regularly.

There is a lot of debate in the US and elsewhere about the real origin of the term Black Friday and of the day. The two are not the same thing. We have It in this debate emerges that there are many ways in which the day is black or is a dark day.

The first legend is that black Friday is celebrated in the US as the day of shopping after Thanksgiving, and it enables companies to boost their balance sheet in the very last few weeks of the year, this avoiding negative financial reports. It is used by business to mark the beginning of the Christmas shopping season where corporations and traders hope to make most of the profits of the year.

Another legend is that it is a day of stampede among shoppers racing for bargains on all consumer products. It is also associated since the 1960s with heavy traffic jams on many carriage ways in major cities in the US.

Another is that it is a day when many people end up with huge debts and find themselves in the red, putting their families on the line. Indeed, many people engage in binge shopping

The day can be black in many ways, of course. But it is also black because it was a day also when white slave owners sold at a bargain black people who were “owned” as slaves. It made sense in the commerce of the time that the bargains would be over the most priced “commodity”, the black person.

It is therefore important to not forget the various meanings of the day and use them wisely to enrich humanity rather than to down ourselves in unnecessary debt and end up re-enslaved in commercial designs that add no good to us. We have to be careful that we don’t but stuff because it is available, but more so because we need it now and will need it in the near future.

It is very possible that we can end up with more than just a Black Friday, but whole black season as the year ends. It is possible that many who will respond to the bargains will end up in debt or with guilt for buying things they did not need.

But, more so, many will end the year having not learn how to humanize others, ensuring that never again should one human chain another physically or psychologically. Never again should we believe the myth of race, the myth of racial supremacy, the myth about inherent inequality of races…

What a wonderful thing to use the day not just to acquire material, but to enhance our humanity one to another, men to women, black to white, heterosexuals to homosexuals, urbanites to ruralitarians, and so forth.

Have a black Friday that has more meaning than just being trapped in excessive materialism and mindless celebration of days that have more significant than shopping.

Certainly, take the bargains. You save your finances. Be wise…
