Black Privilege: Even me I want!

2014-12-29 19:29

I remember repeating the slogan, “Say it out loud, I’m black and I’m proud!” countless times, after having briefly done American history, but what if a white person decides to take pride in his “race”? Then, it’s racism. But not if black people do it.

So it clicked, if there is such a thing as White Privilege, is it possible that "Black Privilege" is as equally valid?

Say it exists, what could be the privilege that black people hold? Certainly not an easy question to answer, as, from all angles, it seems that blacks are the victims. Unless we consider, for a moment, that being a victim is a privilege.

As black people, we are immensely blessed to carry with us this burden of a past abundant in suffering, that will forever justify the need for us to appear as victims, instead of emerging as survivors. This means that in whatever situation, we will be the ones in need of help, a push, a head start. While a strong majority in population, our history has helped us shape our solid status as that of a minority group, that is always disadvantaged, and always needs to be looked after.

What does this mean for us? It means we can enter tertiary education with a lower score; it means we hold the first class right to all sorts of claims, and no one can take away their value, for we have been oppressed, and everything that departs from our mouths must now be heard.

It means we are the main beneficiaries of political correctness, for even though we were robbed of our dignity, we were blessed with melanin. But most of all, it means we can pull the race card anytime we so wish, as after all, Blacks can't be racist.

Forget all white privileges. Never being accused of racism and thriving on making other people feel guilty for their suppressed discrimination is the best privilege a race can experience.

We've managed to, in all our suffering, unlearn the things we dreamt of, the ideals of equality that we longed for, and it all resulted in an overall replacement of definitions, "fair" discrimination.

Is discrimination ever fair? Whether fair or not is perhaps a discussion for another day, but it is certainly legal. And so, it is justified. This time, the prosecutor is the underdog.

The itching question is: can one truly entertain the idea of "Black Privilege" in a world where blacks still constitute a minority group? Can blacks really be racist, considering that racism is, as per popular definition, an instrument used to belittle and directly discriminate against the inferior race? If the white race has been portrayed as the superior one, to whom would blacks direct their racism? In other words, is there any other race that is deemed lower than that of black?

Such questions shall be scratched individually, but for the time being, it might be useful for us, all of us, to check our privilege.

When we, as blacks, begin to take advantage of our victim hood and see it as a gateway to corruption, things become dangerous, and people, dubious. Our identity as black folk should not lie in our history of suffering alone, or our competence be compromised in people's distrust in policies such as BEE. Blacks should not declare blackness as a means of suffocating the other, nor should we capitalize on the white man's guilt.

Most will say that if whites are allowed their privilege, so should blacks; but we're not most.

We few, the happy few, are committed to first, understanding each other and second, furthering the doings of our people. Blacks don't need to be pulled up. We stood before and we must stand again.

At least we should.
