Blaming Al Qaeda is a cop out

2014-12-09 16:53

Yes, by all means"Blame Al Qaeda"  as one editorial declares! (Mercury 9.12.2014)  But be honest and fair here. What are the origins of Al Qaeda? This is a convenient construct by the US , through the media, to define a nebulous entity which has no physical existence and therefore, exists everywhere ideologically at least. Recall that after the retreat of communism, the US needed to focus on the challenges mounted by non governmental actors acting under the cloak of Islam.

Enter Al Qaeda whereas, as Jason Burke convincingly argues, in his book,  that there is no such entity. And if you read the book Noam Chomsky co-authored with Edward S Herman entitled "Manufacturing Consent" the picture of fabricating an enemy become so easy. Al Qaeda grew after 911. Check this out for the sake of objectivity.

I condemn what happened to Piere Korkie. So close was he to freedom.

So , allow me to state on record that those who perpetrated this vile ,despicable deed of killing Korkie have no place in civilised society and cannot be countenanced. I denounce them with all the vigour of morality. And so I agree by all means blame these hate festereing brigands who held him hostage and demanded ransom.

At the same time, through introspection, lets be honest and ask searing questions as to why is all this happening.

Is this symptomatic of Professor Samuel P Huntington's thesis referred to as "The Clash of Civilisations"? I say it is.

The Mercury editorial is thus woefully deficient in that whilst it articulates the pain of every South African, it so convenient to pin the tail on a non existent entity whereas if that editorial was brave enough and asked searing and probing questions it would have been objectively accepted as valid and fair comment. Hence this challenge. That editorial constructed as it is, feeds into Islamophobia and the temptation of alienting through such subtle profiling that is enbeded in the subtext.

I hope and pray that this insanity fair  constructed as. " Al Qaedaism" is shut down. Too many innocent people have perished through drone strikes and unilateral interventions which in turn encourage revenge and retaliations and which feed into the cycle of hate and injustice everywhere.

To the family of Piere Korkie, no amount of hand wringing prayers will bring him back. But I lift my hands to Allah to intercede and to bring peace and conciliation between His children.
