Bokkie Week: Why are we still here?

Black girl turned away from trials.

I hate these kinds of stories. It makes me want to spew a few profanities of note - I would, but I’ve been expressly forbidden from doing so.

In any case, it’s outrageous enough, and probably illegal, that Bokkie Week hockey trials at Hoerskool Grenswag in Rustenburg, a “by invitation-only-white-Afrikaner-children” affair, exists to begin with.

But then to try and justify it? And worse still, to possibly knowingly send an innocent pupil from another school into the ridiculous fray it is riles me!

All this child wanted was to play hockey, so she went to said event, registered - and only after paying her registration fee nogal, was she told she wasn’t eligible. And yes, it is because she’s black. There is no getting away from that. The organisers of the trials have confirmed that much.

The teen in question maintains she was encouraged by her coach at her school in Brits to attend the trial. The school principal denies this, saying the children heard about the event via the grapevine and did so of their own accord. Maybe they didn’t know any better.

However, if it turns out any staffer encouraged this pupil to “go for it”, knowing what the status quo was - that also speaks volumes. Why would you knowingly expose anyone to that kind of humiliating treatment? Without them knowing upfront what the score was?

If Bokkie Week wants to be exclusively white – and keep its head buried in the sand, then so be it! And the same goes for all the loads of other race-exclusive events that I’m sure exist in our lovely rainbow country....

Why would one want any association with it? And if you do ... well, that says all it needs to, doesn’t it? This debate could go on and on and on……

Either way you look at it, it leaves a bitter taste. But my question is this: Why are we dealing with this kind of shit - still? Enough already, it’s exhausting!

p.s. And by the way, no, this particular story is not the same as BEE, or affirmative action. Don’t go there. It’s school level hockey for goodness sake. Albeit with an abhorrent racial twist. And as stale and old as the “using the race card” argument is for certain people, so is the AA one.
