Can you make money by joining the e-learning revolution?

2016-03-17 19:18

I have written in the past about how the online learning market is in the process of exploding. It has grown many-fold over the last three years, and that growth is just accelerating. Different research points to slightly different industry statistics, but together, the consumer and business online learning market will surpass 100 billion dollars in 2016.

As I've written here in the past, the company that's emerged as the market leader is on which anyone can teach anything in which they feel that they are an expert. In my past articles I've urged you to try making money there by teaching, and today I want to bring you some news and updates on what's happening with Udemy.

Udemy has announced that on April 4th, no course can be marked under $20 or above $50, and no discount can be less than $10. This, of course, makes my current Udemy sale page so much more attractive with every course priced at just $9. If you want to learn just about anything, I am planning to collect the biggest Udemy coupons with the biggest discounts from many of the top instructors on my Udemy coupon page as an amazing resource for anyone looking to learn anything. But for now, let me focus on how you can take advantage of the new Udemy pricing if you are planning or thinking about creating a course there.

Since no course can be marked below $20 and discounted below $10 starting April 4th, what you have on your side is urgency. If you quickly create a course before April 4th (I'll give you the basics for how to do that later in this article), you will be able to promote it for under $10 with the urgent call to buy for people to take advantage of the sub $10 prices. This will create a buying frenzy for your course with people trying to take advantage of such amazing discounts.

How to quickly create your own course

Udemy has a minimum requirement of 30 minutes of video content and 5 distinct lectures. That is a pretty minimal requirement and just about anyone can record 30 minutes of video in 1-2 days. This is made even easier by the fact that the introduction and conclusion lectures will take up some time which means that you have to provide even less than 30 minutes of total instructional content.

You can easily record the instructional content using your computer. You don't even need to buy any fancy video camera equipment. One thing I do recommend is to make sure that your lighting is good and you have a nice background when you film. If you don't have a professional background immediately available to you, you can buy a green screen which is relatively inexpensive. I also recommend that your audio quality is good. You can ensure that by buying a microphone. They are usually very reasonably priced online, and if you have a mac, most macs come with a very good built-in microphone.

The biggest challenge when creating a course is to make sure that your presentation is engaging and insightful. For me this has been the biggest challenge because I was never trained as a public speaker and had to learn this skill on my own. If you are not an experienced public speaker, it might be difficult for you to make vast improvements quickly because it is such a subjective skill. But I still recommend publishing your course before April 4th because you can always upload new and improved videos when you feel that you have become a better public speaker.

I would also strongly urge you to think about in what specific subject matter you are a true expert. If you are just kind of an expert in some field, it probably won't make for a great course, and true experts will create better courses which is not good for you long-term.

Here is a tutorial with an additional 25 tips from one of the top instrucotrs on Udemy John Colley on what you should consider when making your course.

How much money can you make?

Your earning potential depends on the quality of your course and the quality of your own promotion. But there are a few people who make over a million dollars a year on Udemy. So the sky is essentially the limit. Although there are only a few millionaires made by Udemy, there are many instructors including myself who make a very nice monthly salary teaching on Udemy, and you can too.
