Corrupt leaders are necessary for freedom

2014-05-06 16:20

In order for one to understand the concept of freedom, one needs to know what freedom is not. South Africans go to the polls, millions exercising their right to vote connoting the existence of freedom. Freedom in one form or another that either came at a price or resultant of threads interwoven into the fabric of society over millennia. Looking closer at the concept of freedom, one is faced with an ideal that requires analysis for it seems grossly misunderstood.  Philosopher Rudolf Steiner concluded that freedom exists in two parts, in thought then in action. The thought process results in output in the form of knowledge, a key ingredient to guide actions that exhibit the existence of various forms of freedom. One might have knowledge of a certain form of freedom but the reality of prevailing conditions may indicate otherwise. Political parties, great and small, new and old, have promised one form of freedom or another. Many, if not all promising to hand over some form of freedom on a silver platter. Promising liberation from economic challenges, corruption, crime and violence to individuals and the social collective. However, in order for freedom to exist, one must have knowledge of a pre-existing undesirable condition and secondly, one must be free to make their own inference about taking actions that result in freedom, actions which may deprive another of their freedom. Upon comprehending the  inhibiting condition, it is expected that one will take action fully aware why they are doing so with the intention of introducing change. In order to understand the constraints of feudalism, socialism, capitalism or communism, communism needs to have been an reality at some given point in time, leading to the evolution of the state.  In order for one to fully comprehend the existence good, one needs to have perceived evil, understood it as undesirable and work towards attaining good. The existence of darkness makes one aware of the existence of light thus the need for it. The  failure to deliver public goods makes one aware of the need to turn to either privatisation or the deposal of the government of the day through legitimate or illegitimate means.

Thus said, if the existence of a corrupt government and the knowledge of it leads one to carry out actions that translate to freedom in reality or at least advances towards the ideal of freedom, can it be said that  Africans in general are not rational beings or can it be inferred that the understanding of corruption as a concept is lacking in our society? If the existence of freedom requires that a pre-existing condition be done away with, is freedom freedom at all for giving one freedom requires taking freedom from another in many an instance (for example economic freedom and equal distribution of wealth)? If freedom requires independence in decision making and propaganda is the presentation of  partial information used primarily to influence an audience and further an agenda by presenting facts selectively, can any political party really claim to give freedom (don't all political parties try to brainwash the audience into thinking a certain way)? If political parties exist to bring equality hence freedom to an unequal society, can it be said that political parties are agents for compromise
