Could Messi be moving to Chelsea FC?

2015-01-08 15:47

Over the last few years we have seen world record breaking transfers from Neymar to Bale to even Suarez. Football is definitely a Multi-Billion Pound sport, where cosmopolitan players receive about half a million pounds a week in wages. However nothing really prepares us for the prospect of a monumental transfer like that of Lionel Messi to Chelsea FC. Is it possible?  Can this deal actually happen?

I strongly believe that Chelsea FC fans will have to wait at least a year or two before they could ever see Messi in an Adidas Chelsea jersey playing for the Blues. Even though the magnetism of having Cesc Fabregas assist Messi once again is quite high and the fact that Messi is starting to make himself a bit of a nuisance in his dissatisfaction under Luis Enrique makes this rumour have some bite to it. It is a rare occurrence that there is smoke without fire and rumours are certainly starting to build. However Messi to Chelsea is a highly unlikely prospect. Let me tell you why...

Looking at the transfer fees of Bale and Suarez, the cost of a Messi transfer could be huge. Figures being touted range from £120m to in excess of £170m. Certainly, any deal would eclipse the world-record fee Real Madrid paid Tottenham for Gareth Bale 18 months ago. Messi only signed a new contract at Camp Nou in May, which runs until 2019 and is reported to include a buy-out clause worth nearly £200m.

£200m is a lot of money even for a club as big as Chelsea with the club trying to stay within the remit of Financial Fair Play. The Blues have been pretty strict with their FFP dealings, parting with the likes of Juan Mata and David Luiz in order to finance arrivals of Cesc Fabregas and Diego Costa, with money left in the bank. To do the same to fund the arrival of Messi would probably see Mourinho having to sell half of his squad, so the club will have to find other revenue streams. These could include selling naming rights to Stamford Bridge or their Cobham training ground. This is very unlikely.

Barcelona FC are under a transfer ban until next January, for breaching rules on signing international players under the age of 18. This may see them dig their heels in when it comes to selling their top names, with the club unable to bring in replacements. Also selling their prize asset to a club that challenges for the same UEFA Champions League every single time would be foolish.

Messi is Gerrard like loyal. He is the type of player to rather spend the rest of his football career in the USA or UAE where he would never play against Barcelona in a competitive match than to join one of the Champions League teams. Messi also really enjoys the rivalry with the Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Barcelona player recently followed Chelsea FC, Cesc Fabregas who is his close friend ever since breaking through the youth teams at Barcelona and Filipe Luis on Instagram. Even though this created a lot of hype and rumours around the possibility of a 200 Million Pound move to Stamford Bridge, Messi also follows other clubs like Manchester City and Newell’s Old Boys.

I have no doubt that if there were no transfer ban on Barcelona FC and if Chelsea didn’t have to remit to the Financial Fair Play we could have been looking at the transfer of the decade. I guess Chelsea FC will have to just rely on Costa, Fabregas and Hazard to win them the quadruple for now.
