Day 2: From Davos with Love

2012-01-24 09:33

Klaus Schwab, the founder of WEF spent some time with us today and explained how the Global Shapers network came about.

50% of the world population is under the age of 27 and he felt the Davos meeting needed a fundamental change to remain legitimate representative of the world and its future. Just under 500 global shapers have been selected around the world and 70 of the 2600 delegates are Global Shapers. More importantly there are Global Shapers on key public plenery sessions with significant media coverage.

Most interesting thing to note about Klaus Schwab is his partnership with wife. They came together after she proved instrumental in effective conference organisation, something WEF has been outstanding at. I do believe the role and impact of successful personal partnership in professional success is under explored. Especially in the time of self sufficiency and highly individualistic plans and perhaps there is something to be learnt from them.

My fellow Global Shapers are a remarkable force. And the ability of WEF to attract extraordinary human capital is well proven. Some of the earliest Young Global Leaders selected at the start of WEF include Angela Morkel, David Cameron and Tony Blair well before they ascended to power. That speaks volumes of the expectations of this inaugural Global Shapers group. Notably we have a 23 year old Pilipino Mayor; pioneer in location based advertising in Japan whose company just got acquired by Yahoo; and a founder of an NGO that has raised over $45 million that is donated to the most efficiently run charities. Interestingly enough, the entire African representation of Global Shapers of six (excluding North Africa and Middle East) are all black women. So it’s not looking too bad at all.
