Dear Conservatives...

2013-08-28 07:45

To those of you who think me ignorant of God's law, I will have you know that I grew up in a religious household, and that I once believed in a cosmic entity as well. To my everlasting shame I also expressed strong opinions against homosexuality and abortion.

To this day I feel that my true nature was suppressed and hardly behind the doctrines I professed to believe in. I was the product of what I had been taught from a young age, and ignorant of the credibility behind opposing arguments.

Because of my adolescence and ignorance of the world I was unable to relate to and empathize with grown-up and responsible individuals who were ostracised for their lifestyles and choices. In my mind I believed that such sentiments of intolerance were right in the eyes of a higher power.

But then one day, something happened. I questioned the existence of an all-seeing, all-powerful, heavenly patriarch who I was told would reward or punish me according to my choices and actions in life.

I realized that the bedroom antics of two, consenting adults was really none of my damn business.

I saw mothers who had done the best with what they had been given, but at times wished they could've been educated on and provided with alternative options in their lives. These were women who had not used contraceptives because such a precaution was considered an evil tampering with the blessings of God. Only the devil incarnate would even remotely contemplate undergoing an abortion.

I consulted experts and conducted research, all the while exercising my ability to think critically. Hence I chose to be liberal, without fear or prejudice.

I find it amusing when I am instantly accused of being brain-washed and ignorant of God's law written in what you all refer to as his word, the bible. You'll be surprised to learn that I have read your bible from cover to cover, and decided that I do not agree with the bulk of its principals.

Not to mention the book was written by men, who for all we know could've merely been documenting their own agendas. I have seen both sides of the coin, and have made an informed decision regarding how I choose to live my life and what I wish to accept as facts (containing concrete evidence) and dismiss as a possibilities.

I know some of you must be rolling your eyes by now, especially those of you who are offended by my opinion and feel that I believe all Christians  to be intellectually inferior.

Firstly, there is no need to take my rants so personally as I address belief systems rather then individuals. The ideologies I disapprove of and specifically address here are produced by any religion, and not just Christianity.

I am not challenging your IQ or ability to exercise critical thinking, but rather your willingness to do so. I do not feel that my mental capacity and ability to retain knowledge has magically increased since I chose to become an atheist. In fact, back in the day my mind soaked up a great deal of indoctrination - which according to your perspective, is considered knowledge.

There are many people in my acquaintance, many of them very dear friends, who follow various religions. I am tolerant of their beliefs, and here is why.

They acknowledge that their faith defies logic, and that chances are their beliefs could prove to be a complete and utter sham. Therefore they do not run around like happy-clappers, hold sermons, and conduct rallies to convert millions of unsuspecting individuals to their cause.

"But what about you?" Some of you may ask, "Aren't you just going around converting others to your cause?"

Well, I'll let you decide. Do you see me attempting to dictate who men and women should be permitted to fuck/love? Mind you, I do object on occasions where one party is not quite as willing as the other, a.k.a. a rape situation.

Have I ever proclaimed that everyone in the world should become gay, or enforced that lifestyle in any way on people who have been born straight? No, because no one chooses to be gay, just like how no one chooses to be straight.

Do you see me rallying the troupes in protest outside churches and picketing the funerals of those who practice religion? Never, I honestly don't know how anyone could find the time and drive to perform such stunts.

Do you see me accusing all religious individuals of suffering from a mental disorder? Some of them do perhaps, but hey, I'm sure we atheists have our crazies too.

Have I ever said that mandatory abortions should be performed on every victim of rape or financial instability? Perhaps I feel that abortion is the responsible choice in those occasions, and if I were in that position I personally would appreciate various options.

But whatever I choose to have done to my body is ultimately my decision, and not to be enforced on anyone else. I am simply advocating for the freedom to choose, how is that so hard to digest?

Some of you perceive me as intolerant. Perhaps I am in a sense, I am intolerant of the intolerance which is so often expressed by members of your movement.

For what purpose do militant conservatives actively fight to suppress human rights? I would understand if the movement was rallying against real atrocities: murder, rape, theft, famine etc. However, it seems they really couldn't be bothered with all that, and are more concerned with attacking decent people who lead alternative lifestyles.

The fact of the matter is that atheism and its core values are not all-out to push an agenda, as many conservatives (members of my family included) would like to believe. I speak for myself when I say that frankly I quite loathe the idea of managing a bunch of converts who are willing to blindly follow my bidding. I already have enough responsibilities of my own to attend to as it is.

Because of this, I simply encourage personal accountability, and freedom to do and be whatever you choose, so long as such choices do not infringe upon the rights and well-being of another human being.

Sincerely,

M.Ferreira
