Do we really need more International Food Brands in SA?

2017-03-12 18:05

If you take a look at the last year, we have seen the influx of International food/drink Franchises gracing our shores i.e. Starbucks, Krispy Kremes, Dunkin Donuts, Dominos Pizza and now the latest offering is Paul Bakery.

Please don't get we wrong, we love that the world is noticing South Africa, and making it a place to invest in. With all the latest talk of a sugar tax, and all the Junk Food places that we all go hyper for, do we not have some of our own "Golden Gems" to export, besides Nandos and Spur who have done us extremely proud. The only other one i know of taking Dubai by Storm is Tasha's who is branching out and making quite a name. Surely we as South Africans have that unique ability to go out there and show them what we can do with our talent. Being a Foodie, i love going out and trying new things, but i would like to see more local places being showcased. Why oh why do we think we need to play second fiddle to overseas counterparts, when we have some really amazing chefs and food choices right here on our doorstep.

I for one, always try to promote my area and give people reasons to visit here. Yes, the East Rand is not Sandton, but its not meant to be. That is why it is unique in its people and its vibe, but it doesnt mean that you wont find a fabulous restaurant or have a less enjoyable meal. It is also about the people that you are spending that time with that make the meal perfect.

Think about it the next time you go out, are you going to the latest "IN" spot for the name and to be seen there, or is your sole purpose to spend time having a great meal with people you care about?

Whats your take on this? Would love to hear...
