Do you understand Feminism?

Perhaps if people became more familiar with the concept of feminism and set aside some time to research the theory then there would be a greater sense of understanding of the dissatisfaction with certain social institutions. The feminist movement includes the following: awareness campaigns for women; hosting conferences for and about women; empowering women in the media; raising funds for women working in the non-profit sector; and publishing literature about women. If you do the aforementioned, you may be considered a feminist regardless of whether you are a man or a woman.

I would call you a feminist because when you focus on women, women become the subjects of the discussion which changes the traditional way of seeing the world. Furthermore, by being an advocate for women, you show traits that are allied to feminism.

Feminism is also a social and political movement that strives for equality between the sexes and the idea of feminism for me is illustrated in the work of one of my favorite feminist writers, Chimamanda Ngozi Adiche. Some people commonly believe that feminism is an import from the West and that it has the potential to destroy traditional family relations but I have seen a different side to feminism. Feminism can embrace the idea of the nuclear family and simultaneously fight for the rights of women. It is important though, that men’s attitude about women’s role in society needs to change. Women should not only have rights in the Constitution; these need to become a lived reality.

Feminism is not only about equality, neither is it about making males inferior to females, or anti-men, but it is about addressing all the political, economic and the social issues that affect women in society. Feminism became important in society when it became clear that women are not treated equally to men. Although feminism is global and continues to play an essential role in society, there are still many goals and objectives that must be achieved.

Thanks to South Africa’s liberal Constitution: Women are now in leadership positions; there are NGO’s that emphasize the rights of women; research is conducted to enhance women’s lives; there are better organizational policies and working environments for women; books are published for and about women; there are more women in business; more women are becoming financially independent; and there are TV and Radio shows that focus on women and women issues.

I am a feminist who believes in equal opportunities because I deserve to be given that which I’ve worked for and because I am competent in what I do. Should I experience inequality because of my gender, then I am forced to use my feminist values and skills to stand up for myself and other women.
