Doubts about new public protector unfounded

2017-02-23 13:49

Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane's partiality is often questioned by the media. Unlike her predecessor who was the darling of the media specifically for investigating President Zuma.

False accusations have been peddled about her work. This is damaging and misleading the public. The common mistake is to compare her to Thuli Madonsela, who bravely prioritised high profile cases. On her acceptance speech in Parliament Mkhwebane outlined her vision of empowering people at grassroot level.

These are poor people who can't afford justice and there is nothing wrong with prioritising them. It is clear that they both have different strategies.

In every decision taken by her office , it is followed by a press statement to clarify the decision. Her decision making is always doubted and perceived as in favour of President Jacob Zuma.

This country has spent millions of rands trying to prosecute President Zuma. It is not prudent for the public protector to use the already stretched resources in her office and invest them in a futile exercise.

It is on record that her office did not refuse to challenge President Zuma's appeal but she was awaiting legal opinion whether to oppose or not, which was within her right. Why is she called a state defender and a Gupta puppet?

Political parties waged in, the DA called her a spy prior to her appointment. It is unfortunate that the DA did not release information or go to court to stop her appointment. The veracity of the allegation could not be verified, unless the DA produce evidence. Why on earth is the DA allow us to have a public protector who was a spy?

Julius Malema regretted supporting her appointment. He called her a Gupta puppet in the kitchen. It must be remembered that it is not for the first time he supported a decision and regretted it later. Surely, there is something wrong with his decision making.

Civic organisation AfriForum applauded her for fast tracking backlogs of cases that were not attended by her predecessor.

Public protector requested the public to give her a chance to do her work and make a mark. Credit must also be given to the former public protector Thuli Madonsela for enhancing the image of the office.
