Ending Syria's multi-state proxy war

2016-12-17 14:56

The ineffective foreign policies, disastrous interventions and hypocrisy of some Western leaders and the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has led to a bloodbath in Syria. Some analysts have correctly labelled the atrocities being carried out by autocrat and tyrant Bashar al Assad a "Holocaust". It is so sad that daily we see and read about the brutal atrocities being committed by the ruthless regime of Assad flashed across news channels and we are somewhat silent about it. Due to geo-strategic and economic interests in Syria, the Syrian people have become the victims of a bloody proxy war between the different permanent members of the UNSC owing to their own interests in Syria.

It seems we have learnt nothing from the destruction, suffering and pain of World War 1 and 2, Darfur, Bosnia, Rwanda, just to name a few. Seeing distressed human beings, flesh, blood, body parts lying around and children being made orphans and women being made widows every day should spring us all into action. In Syria people are paying daily with their lives for this terrible war which they have nothing to do with and did not decide to be a part of. This is not about territory or who is right or wrong. This is about human beings, human rights, rule of law and justice. It’s time to move beyond talks and conferences to find a life of dignity for Syrians caught in this brutal war that has displaced, killed and harmed hundreds of thousands of the most vulnerable of the vulnerable human beings in over five years of ruthless fighting.

Will disposing of the dictator Bashar Assad achieve a lasting ceasefire to stop the war and lead to a better future for the Syrian people? I believe, besides calling for the removal of the tyrannical, corrupt, and sectarian regime of Assad, the United States of America, Iran, Russia and other foreign role players should also stay away from the issues in Syria and allow the Syrians the space to negotiate, reconcile and craft a better future for their country and people.

It is no longer just a matter of removing Assad; it is a matter of helping Syrians to live and co-exist peacefully, regain ownership of their country and to re-build it. When Assad allegedly used chemical weapons on his people some Western countries like the US demanded that Assad should step down. Instead of stepping down Assad roped in Russia, Iran and Hezbollah and increased the crimes against humanity. With the added firepower Assad recaptured lost territories such as Aleppo in the most brutal and inhuman manner. The failed interventionism of some Western countries led to unbearable violations of human rights in Syria.

Previous examples of regime change not only removed the tyrant but also destroyed the country and led to increased instability and suffering. We need to take cautionary and important warnings and messages from the wars in Afghanistan, Egypt, Iraq, Libya and other war ravaged countries around the globe. Together with immediately removing Assad we need to empower Syrians to establish unity in order to build a coherent, sovereign and successful state and sufficient unity to challenge effectively and constructively the obstacles and barriers they will face after Assad is ousted or leaves.
