Everything you need to know about your SA passport

2016-04-14 08:55

The Department of Home Affairs has recently launched their eHomeAffairs portal which enables South Africans to apply for Smart IDs and passports online then have their fingerprints verified and picture taken at their bank.

At the moment only applicants between the ages of 30 - 35 can apply online.

What is a passport?

A passport is issued to a country’s citizens for international travel and identification. It is used to verify one’s country of citizenship. If traveling outside your country, it is used to regain entry into your country of citizenship.

Passports costs R400.00 and take 4-6 weeks to process. Upon receiving your passport, the first thing you need to do is fill in the particulars page. Fill in your permanent residence address, contact information incase you lose your passport, and the name, address, and contact number of someone to notify in case of accident or death abroad.

Now you might think you are ready to travel the world but instead you should take time to learn about the financial, political, cultural and most importantly legal environment of your intended destination.

Unfortunately our passport is not as powerful as Americans and EU citizens who can travel to as many countries as they want. For us third world citizens, there are visa requirements we have to consider when we are planning a trip.

What is a Visa?

A visa is a form of permission for a non-citizen to travel to, enter, transit or remain in a particular country. A visa does not guarantee entry. That remains the right of the immigration officials of the country concerned.

What do I need to apply for a visa?

Most times they require proof of funds, bank statements, income tax returns, return tickets, hotel bookings, and an invitation letter.

South Africa has the 2nd most powerful passport in Africa, we can visit 58 countries visa free and get visas on arrival at 32 countries.
