Families: How to Choose a Name that will Build Your Baby and will Love for a Lifetime

Families not just nucleus family of mom, pop and brothers and sisters but also the whole extent family is important in your life. I think the fact that President Barack Obama’s awareness of and in contact with his large extent family that spread across three continents; Africa, America and Asia has enriched his life in a number of ways. The fact that as a young man he went on a mission to discover, talk to, shake hands and get to know his people of different races and backgrounds have given him gravity and spiritual fulfillment that formed the basis of his phenomenal magical success.

I am writing and reflecting on families in the day in which we are living where many people within the black middle class in particular are developed alien culture - avoiding their extended family like a plaque thinking that their cousins, uncles, nieces and nephews  are they to borrow money or seek and advantages from them.

Wyatt Emory Cooper the father of Anderson Cooper the anchor of CNN Anderson Cooper 360 once wrote a book in 1975 titled Families: A Memoir and Celebration. The book while it is deeply personal talking about the Coopers and Andersons its message is relatable and applicable on a wider scope.

In Families: A Memoir and Celebration, Wyatt Cooper is talking about the importance of families in one’s life. He writes personally about himself and how he feels about the whole aspect of a family, "In my sons' youth, their promise, their possibilities, my stake in immortality is invested." I don't imagine Wyatt would mind if we took a minute today to consider how proud he would have been of his son Anderson and the work he does.

Certainly the work that Anderson is doing not only as an anchor of CNN’s Anderson 360 but his life of courage and dedication will be forever be with us and thus by that his father will forever be reminded. Anderson Cooper’s name is taken from his paternal grandmother surname, whose maiden name was Anderson. His name shows how his dad valued the preservation of family – in naming Anderson he did not go for the phenomenal or the attraction of modern names such as naming your child Blue Ivy. In naming his son he did not go for the fancy - he rooted his son in family names.

Wyatt Cooper goes further: "It is in the family that we learn almost all we ever know of loving.” As I said the book is a personal memoir but written in the style that you can learn from it.

We all want to "belong" and feel accepted. And one’s family that goes beyond nucleus family but the whole clan provides a sense of belonging and that belonging is the essence of love – that where we learn love and appreciation. Family is where our roots take hold and from there we grow. We are molded within a unit, which prepares us for what we will experience in the world and how we react to those experiences. Values are taught at an early age and are carried with us throughout our life.

Wyatt Cooper’s book is comprehensive and wide ranging  in approach in tackling this subject of the importance of the family in one’s life and name - not only does he talk about his family but the village community and surroundings where his family originate and is rooted and that village is part of his family.

Back to Barack Obama: Barack Obama discovering himself and renaming himself after his father’s names was a magical moment to him as he writes in his book; Dreams from my Father:  A Story of Race and Inheritance.
