Fire Pravin!

It’s time that President Jacob Zuma went the full distance and left South Africa no doubt as to what kind of person he is. It’s time to stop the pretense that he is following due process and that he values the rule of law.

Not that there is a soul, aside from his son, who believes that he has any integrity. The ANC is in crises and by not recognizing this, they will devastate not just the party itself but the entire country as well. The noise that we are hearing is the sound of the party being ripped apart.

Now is the time for Zuma to self destruct and not just threaten to do so. Because by his actions, he is doing so in any event. Only slowly and painfully. So let’s do it and be done.

The sooner that he does that, the sooner the country can pick up the pieces and start again. It will seem insurmountable at first, but we have survived the PW Bothas and we will survive the Zumas.

There is an old, most probably inaccurate, anecdote of someone who places frogs in a pot of cold water. Slowly the temperature increases until the frogs, who have hardly noticed the increase until it is too late, perish from the heat. Alternatively, as the story goes, if the same frogs were to be thrown into the already hot water, they would jump out and be saved.

South Africa has reached boiling point. The water around us has reached such intensity that the risk of death is now real. The water that has been heating up slowly is starting to boil. If we were thrown in at this state, we would leap out in order to save ourselves. But sadly, Zuma has to date been smart enough to elevate the heat to levels that we are just able to tolerate it.

The reason behind Zuma’s motivation to destroy the economy are one of, or a combination of the following:

- He is afraid that Pravin Gordhan stands between him and the State coffers.

- He wants to punish South Africans for turning against him and the ANC

- He wants to establish dominance in his already fractured party.

- He has adopted a “Scorched earth policy.”

What is perplexing, is that the NEC as well as ordinary members of the ANC have not reached a point that even they realize that the man has either lost his mind or that he is dangerous and a psychopath who will stop at nothing to exact revenge on a population that has deserted him. Aside from his son, and the stooges he has placed in positions of power, is there any member of the ANC who is prepared to stand up and say that this behavior makes any sense at all… without their fingers crossed behind their backs?

Zuma seems to have placed powerful positions where they wait to be activated at any given moment. From the Head of the Hawks, to the NPA, to the SABC and SAA, it is clear that this strategy has been meticulously planned and coordinated. What says the NEC about this? What says the ANC and the party who fought for freedom? Are they not mortified, ashamed and speechless? Where are they and why in God’s name is Zuma still in power?

What yet continues to “impress” is how he has managed to control State Institutions. Much like his very frightening “Sleeper cells," that he has placed in strategic positions. South Africans were robbed of hope last week by the man who was meant to give us just that. We felt that spring had come at last and that the long cold winter had ended. The currency had improved and we started to feel hope for the first time in many months.

Which only makes his actions worse. More cruel. And more devastating.

Zuma should be fired. Very few will debate that. And maybe by removing Pravin even the spineless NEC will see that.

God help us either way.
