Freedom starts with us!

The word freedom has a very emotional connotation. As South Africans we are supposed to be free. Are we? I don’t think so...

What does the word freedom mean? Does it mean that we can come and go as we please, not considering the consequences? I doubt it!

I believe true freedom goes along with accepting responsibility. A prominent law professor once said “when there is absolute freedom, there is no freedom...” I believe that to be true in every sense of the word...

South Africans are quick to make demands. We are equipped with a constitution that allows for human rights to be defended and demanded around every corner. However our lives are filled with tragedy that characterizes our everyday existence. Because that is what we’ve grown into – existing instead of living... Why? Due to the fact that crime dominates the lives of ordinary South Africans...

Yesterday I listened to a story over the radio told by a paramedic. One night he was called out. When he arrived at the scene, he realized that he knew the victim. It was his former English school teacher. She had 29 stab wounds. Her condition was fatal! She subsequently died in the paramedic’s arms... So tragic! So unnecessary!

What does this have to do with freedom? Everything! South Africans are victims of a wave of crime that is totally out of control. It impacts our freedom to its very core.

Unless the government starts to take crime seriously, we have a long way to go. Situations like the one mentioned above, arise every day. It has become the norm instead of something that causes people to take notice. We need a miracle!

In the spirit of freedom, I want to appeal to all South Africans to take a step back and start to think about the way things have deteriorated. It is unacceptable!!!

If we truly want to be free, each and every South African needs to start questioning their motives and actions. Do you operate within the constraints of the law? The reason I ask this is because it is not only serious crime that matters. Small petty crimes add up to the horror in our country. Everything you do has consequences. Not just for yourself, but also for those around you.

Friends who are from Germany, don’t even want to visit Cape Town for a holiday! Cape Town – the most beautiful city in the world...Their reason? South Africa is too violent! What a shame! What an embarrassment!

If we want to be free, we need to accept responsibility for our actions. We need to start making demands on government to take crime serious. Unless this changes, nothing else will change. It impacts our morale. It impacts the economy...

Let’s take back the freedom that was given to us as a rainbow nation. If we want to celebrate true freedom, it means we have to stay true to our constitution. Not just in terms of our rights, but also in terms of our responsibilities...
