Fugitive reminders from Port Elizabeth

2016-04-16 12:29

I , and most certainly millions of South Africans, will not be amongst today's celebrants  in Port Elizabeth, for 20 years on the wounds of a failed attempt at reconciliation only produced suppurating  wounds and save for the 7112 applicants for amnesty ( though only 849 people were granted amnesty) hundreds of thousands strut about the stage in plain sight rubbing salt into our wounds assured of their indemnity.

So you'll understand why  I refuse to celebrate even at the launch of the ANC manifesto in Port Elizabeth ahead of the local government elections. But I will not be silent nor cowed by those who have their own views and who refuse to speak out as I do.

Permit me to explain.....please.

Twenty years ago a major farce was unleashed on a nation suffering from a hangover after the fall of apartheid and the assumption of the ANC as the  governing party.

The fact that only 7112 people bothered to apply for amnesty reinforces my point.

The farce?

The TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION COMMISSION with its aspirational vision proved, twenty years on, to have been a monumental failure for we're still are where we were in a game of musical chairs.

The TRC  weepie/soapie achieved very little and if I'm to be charitable it was a best a political fig leaf and a fraud on a nation punch drunk at a  "  miraculous "  transition that AZAPO tried to expose way back in 1996 as well but the Constitutional Court coram  Ismail Mahomed, the then Deputy President of the CC, spoke about the potential that this gesture would heal a deeply wounded nation.

Well it didn't and so I cannot uncork  the bubbly  as the President and his entourage descended on Port Elizabeth like successful failures.

The day is as hot as the anger of victims into whose wounds salt continues to be rubbed in by the Sparrows of this country.

Daily at dawn when I drive to work I see hungry faces forlornly gazing in my direction. These are the people who were deluded into believing maybe freedom, equality and human dignity will run off them too and not to the well healed who pretend that all is well in South Africa.

I reiterate that only 7112 people applied for amnesty of which 849 were reportedly granted amnesty. What about those hundreds of thousands who hide in plain sight and who, like the Penny Sparrows of this country continue to rub salt into our wounds with impunity?
