Fun in Davos

2012-01-27 07:31

This year has apparently brought more snow to Davos than they have seen in over 10 years. Just my luck.

I, in general require a great deal of sunshine and warmth so I knew there was going to be a bit of battle for me, especially today – the Global Shapers sports day. From options of skiing, cross-country skiing, snowboarding, snow-shoe trekking and ice stock, I opted for something that sounded like it would limit my exposure to the elements – ice-stock. Today I found out that is much like lawn bowls but played on a ice rink under the falling snow and was I frozen within an hour. I probably should have gone with skiing so I could break a sweat and get warmer!

The change in Davos from arrival on Sunday to Tuesday night, the eve of the conference has actually been dramatic. There is now significant traffic on the roads and extraordinary amounts of security with checkpoints every few hundred metres. The locals even have limited excess to their homes. I hear the Swiss army deploys a few thousand officers for the conference.

Registration for the various sessions also opened today, and the popular sessions were booked out in a few hours of opening. The sessions that booked out extremely fast where those addressing growth and challenges in China and India, so Asian interest is quite high.

Tomorrow, the serious stuff begins. Starting with the Africa Welcome Breakfast with all the delegates from Africa.
