GAZA: It's 1948 All Over Again

2014-07-20 07:54

1948 marks the ‘Nakba’ or the ‘catastrophe’, when hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were forced out of their homes and villages.

Israel drops leaflets warning Gaza residents to evacuate ahead of strikes.  (CNN, July 13).

According to articles Palestinian residents are moving out of northern Gaza, headed to U.N. facilities.

Thousands of people fled Gaza's eastern Shejaiya district early on Sunday, many of them on foot, after heavy shelling left casualties lying in the streets, an AFP correspondent reported. (News24, July 20).

When we leave aside all the public relations on both sides of the latest Israeli incursion of Gaza what stands out clearly is how preposterously one-sided the so called war is.

If the “collateral damage” or as Israel calls it “tragic outcome” of those dead innocent human beings isn’t enough to wake up our conscience to stand on the right side of history, then surely Israeli Defence Force (IDF) ground invasion will. (Israel expands Gaza ground offensive - army. News24, 20 July).

I hope and pray Israeli ground forces have some mercy because the true cost of Syria’s brutal war is still fresh in our minds.

The Israel regime needs to adopt a completely new and humane approach to put an end to the current, brutal occupation of Palestine.

To criticize voices against the Israeli occupation or any other feature of Palestinian struggle for freedom is unconscionable. All one, with an iota of human conscience, needs to do is weigh the deaths and destruction on each of the conflicting sides and then make the just and honest decision as to where one should pledge one’s support.

The tragedy in Palestine is not just a local one; it is a tragedy for the world, because it is an injustice that is a menace to the world’s peace to quote Arnold Toynbee, British historian.

We must never to forget our own struggles under Apartheid and hence, wherever possible, always stand in support of the cause of the oppressed for justice and a life of dignity. Every person with moral and ethical integrity will choose to support the brutally oppressed Palestinians.
