Zareef Minty: This isnt a religious or political issue anymore, it is a humanitarian issue

However it all started with land. Here's the truth that we don't hear on the various news channels. Palestinians were not always crammed up in Gaza, in fact in early 1948 it was not the Israelis that occupied Sederot but Palestinian Arabs. Their village was called Huj; they were not enemies of Israel. Two years earlier, these same Arabs had actually hidden Jewish Haganah fighters from the British Army. But when the Israeli army turned up at Huj on 31 May 1948, they expelled all the Arab villagers – to the Gaza Strip! Refugees, they became. David Ben Gurion (Israel’s first Prime Minister) called it an “unjust and unjustified action”. The Palestinians of Huj were never allowed back.

Today about 6000 descendants of the Palestinians from Huj now known as Sederot live in the squalor of Gaza. These are the same "terrorists" Israel is claiming to destroy. Interesting story I must say.

If you look at another country let’s take Britain for example if they were being rocketed they have the right to self-defence, that's true but the Brits don’t have more than a million former inhabitants of the UK cooped up in refugee camps over a few square miles around Hastings.

The Israeli Ambassador keeps on comparing this to other possible events, he keeps on asking what would Canada do or the UK do if rockets were being rocket attacked from the suburbs of their own cities? You see Mr Ambassador the thing is when you want to prove a point which in itself makes me question the integrity of the Israeli government; you do not go harming innocent women and children and expect the world to close their eyes. You see Mr Ambassador what you doing is intelligent but down right disgusting and sneaky by looking for sympathy from Canada and the UK but it's really difficult for countries to sympathize with your government when they wouldn't ever do what you are doing, see the Canadians haven’t pushed the original inhabitants of Canadian territory into refugee camps so how can they ever understand what you are doing.

The Israeli Prime Minister refuses to allow the UN to intervene, when asked to speak and negotiate with the President of Palestine Mahmood Abbas; he first said he wasn't a part of Hamas so he couldn't help. Then when Abbas formed a unity government he said that he can't talk to Abbas because he unified himself with the "terrorists”, now he says he can only talk to him if he breaks away from Hamas but then he won't represent Hamas.

The real worry most of the Israeli government have is the obsession that the dangers of Isis that will storm west from Iraq and Syria arrive on the east bank of the Jordan River.

The truth, of course, is that the Israeli air force would have crushed Isis the moment it dared to cross the Jordanian border from Iraq or Syria.

Even more to the point, if Isis is heading towards the edge of the West Bank, why is the Israeli government still building colonies there – illegally, and on Arab land – for Israeli civilians?

This is not just about the murder of a few Israelis in the occupied West Bank or the many murders of Palestinians in occupied East Jerusalem. Nor about the arrest of many Hamas militants and politicians in the West Bank.  Nor about rockets. As usual, it’s about land.

When writing this article I excluded my religious views and looked at it very objectively because this isn't a religious article but mainly an article on issues of human rights and oppression.

I watched a clip a few days back where the Israeli army would send out a warning explosive called a ‘knock on the roof” to indicate that the civilians should evacuate from a certain area, I was so pleased by this because I could actually see a solution to preventing the number of deaths. When this “knock on the roof” concept was introduced, the Israeli Prime Minister stated that the period between the warning explosive and the actual rocket explosive is a few minutes. In that clip however the period between the two was 57 seconds, now as a member of the United Nations in South Africa, human rights is of utmost importance, innocent civilians are being murdered and killed just to prove a point. There isn’t a country in the world that has citizens that can evacuate from high buildings well in fact any building within a span of 57 seconds, that’s just barbaric and I plan to put pressure on our own government to strengthen their already strong stance on this matter. We will never allow this to happen again.

Now this is where we as South Africans, Africans and global citizens stand up and make our voices heard. See we live in a generation where biased media exists even in our own country so don't expect to see truth over news channels. Social media paved the way for truth because Palestinians posted up what they are looking at and what they are actually experiencing.

We have seen a large number of people around the world, going out and raising funds for Palestine, in Johannesburg, a group of girls decided to create "loom bands" and Palestine Gaza Celine inspired t-shirts where all the proceeds go to directly aid Gaza. The money movement is something that has really caught international media attention, where thousands of Dollars, Pounds, Euros and Rands have the words "Free Palestine" on them, this is extremely tactful because circulation of this is highly likely.

Now the world knows and the world is standing behind the people of Palestine, we've seen a number of celebrities, high profile individuals and public figures supporting the cause, from Cristiano Ronaldo to Selena Gomez to even our South African Zuraida Jardine.

While others like Barack Obama decided to approve of the Israeli's actions. I will never understand Barack; billions of people watch him around the world. He speaks as if he was made to be a president from day one. He is well educated but all of that goes to waste when your duties and decisions are made by a higher power behind you. You see being well spoken will never substitute for a lack of goodwill and a lack of integrity.

A lot of people make the mistake and think that because a government is rotten, all of its people are like that too. I want people all around the world to understand that not all Jewish people are Zionists and in fact a lot of them condemn the attacks on Gaza.

You don't have to be Muslim to act you just have to be human.

We all want this.
