Glorified bullying?

“OMG wish people would grow up! Raping a seat is a normal part of school initiation. Guys that dont do it end up feeling left out, alone, different, so for heavens sake let them do it!!”

“This sort of initiation is good prep for the real world, it teaches you that things are not always fair i.e. people like George W Bush become president! I all lived through it, my father lived through it. Are we breeding a bunch of softies now?”

These are some of the comments made on a story about boys being forced to “mock rape” a chair, at the back of a bus, as part of an “initiation” practice at an upmarket Joburg school.

Oh for goodness sake, really? Apart from mock rape not being funny, acceptable, tongue in cheek…. under any bloody circumstances…..why the hell are these practices being allowed to continue?

I fail to see the value in kids making kids lick the tarmac, measure rugby fields with matchsticks, or smearing faces in nugget, having heads shoved down the toilet bowl, not wearing pants in the heart of an icy bone-chilling winter because you happen to be entering your high school years.

Because it builds character? Puts hair on your chest so to speak? Oh yes, and lets not forget it’s fine, because it’s harmless.

What’s even scarier for me, is how adults (with children of school-going age, being subjected to this antiquated bullshit) can defend this. What the hell?

Is this what you’re paying school fees for, so your child can learn how to be a glorified thug….building harmless character of course while he or she is at it. Feeding on the insecurities of other kids who happen to be younger, tinier in stature…unable to or too terrified to stand up for themselves?

In effect it becomes just another form of bullying. Are people going to stand by and sanction that as well? I bloody well hope not.

And the sad thing is, it will be allowed to continue to happen, for the same bloody-minded stupid reasoning.

But please, can someone tell me, what the fucking hell for?
