Gun shots, in the wee hours of Easter’s Saturday morning.

2014-04-19 17:49

Like every other day, I am up at four o’clock. But this is Saturday morning. I am spending the Easter weekend with my parents, in Kuils River. My father greets me as he leaves for his Saturday treatment at the clinic. Warm hearted, I lay and wait to fall asleep again. Through the cool morning quiet I hear four gun shots ring out and echo across the silence.

I’m not in shock. But I am no longer warm hearted. I listen acutely as a vague aftermath plays out in the distance. Dogs barking and other faint sounds permeate the peace.

Eventually, I fall asleep again. Once awake, the morning carries on as usual. When my father returns at ten o’ clock, my first question is; “did you hear the gunshots?” To which he said that he hadn’t.

Throughout the day, I wonder, ‘Who was shot?’ ‘Why were they shot?’ ‘Who shot whom?’ ‘Was it more than one shooter?’ ‘Will they ever come to my house?’ ‘What will I do if I am faced with this threat?’

I have no answer to these questions.

Yet nothing drives me to find out what happened. It is as if my life story has always been punctuated by gunshots. But this isn’t a war-zone? I have become so used to that kind of background noise. I have accepted it as a sound of my home. It is one that sounds the presence of violence.

Gun violence. Gang violence. Drug violence. Impending violence?

My fears and non-fears, questions and apathy aside. It is most likely that someone died in Kalkfontein today. It is a certainty that today saw someone gunned down.
