Harsh decisions need to be taken

My message to government and to President Zuma is " stop playing firefighter in Burundi when it's our own country  immolating itself courtesy of firebrand anarchists.

Unable to sleep I turn on the TV and change the channel to international news such as Al Jazeera and what I saw and heard about my country terrifies me.

Frame by frame South Africa is being shown on national and international television as a country tottering on the brink of anarchy. Friends based in the US UK and Australia have in-boxed me on social network sites expressing grave concern as campus after campus erupt in a paroxysm of anarchy getting out of control. So they say.

The ugly serpent of anarchism is devouring our democracy as well as rule of law in SA. That's a fact.

The problem I have is what do I tell them in truth for its our country that's being negatively portrayed and causing investors to pull out their investments. It appalls me that young men and women playing with matches in a powder keg hardly realising that's it's their future turning to ashes.

I am concerned at the deafening silence on the part of the EFF.It can show leadership as political capital if it steps into the breach and call the anarchists to order. After all it claims to be the champion for the youth. The same goes for the DA.

Whilst I acknowledge President Zuma playing firefighter in Burundi his comments about our own fires that have hit international headlines aren't helpful. He has to serve notice that government will no longer be tolerant when there are people bent on anarchy destroying rule of law, one of the fundamentals of our constitutional democracy.

This has to stop. If campuses across the country have to be shut down until the insanity and the anarchy ceases  then so be it. We cannot, as citizens, sit back and smugly heap derision at a government too paralysed to take stern action for fear that any unpopular conduct on its part could damage chances of the ruling party returning to power in upcoming local government elections.

Permit me to say to our President that enough is enough. Act now on those who are pouring kerosene on smouldering fires smothering our country inexorably reducing gains to ashes.
