Help Stop Genocide in Burma

2013-04-08 05:08

I am saddened at the mainstream media’s obvious amnesia when it comes to the painful genocide of human beings, mainly Muslims, in Myanmar or Burma.

The recent killing of 13 children in Myanmar (Burma) in a blaze has raised new concern over sectarian tensions that have plagued the country since anti-Muslim violence hit the nation’s heartland last month.

Although authorities in Burma have blamed the fire on an electrical short circuit, Muslims remain suspicious, saying it was set intentionally.

According to reports and human right activists Myanmar has been on edge after sectarian unrest between some radical Buddhists and Muslims erupted, killing and displacing many people, mostly Muslims. The violence has since spread to several other towns where extremist Buddhist mobs have torched or ransacked mosques and Muslim-owned property. The aggression is targeted, coordinated, and premeditated against the Rohingya and Muslim population of Myanmar, while the Burmese government remains complicit, and unwilling to control it. NGO’s within Myanmar have been reporting for the past month of a staggering increase in anti-Islamic and anti-Bengali (Rohingya) propaganda, protests, and hate speeches centred on disturbing notions of Burma as a “Purely” Buddhist nation.

It seems we are witnessing these words coming to realization in the pain, suffering, corpses of burnt children, destroyed villages and entire communities forced to take refuge wherever they can. Most alarming is that this may only be the beginning of more to come. The United Nations (UN) has described the Rohingya as one of the most persecuted groups on the planet.

Furthermore, it has been reported that those who have been able to flee the violence in the past have been hunted by militia and the Burmese border guard and survivors are haunted by witnessing indiscriminate extortion, killings, rape and torture, entirely based upon their ethnic and religious identity. Many human rights activists have described the phenomenon as genocide.

May I ask why are the advocates of human rights and global leaders ignoring the gross persecution and discrimination being carried out against the Rohingya community in Myanmar (Burma)? Why are there no widespread condemnation and decisive action being taken to stop the ethnic violence and cleansing? Why are we suddenly being so silent on this atrocious oppression of thousands of human beings? Is it because they bring nothing to the world economy, play no significant role in world politics or have no worthy connecting thread in the fabric of international inter-relationships.

In short they have nothing to offer to the world outside of their designated living borders. Does this mean that they do not qualify to be classified as "human beings"?

I appeal to all conscience driven, open minded, pro-democracy, just and unbiased people and organisations, fighting for human rights, justice and peace, to show solidarity towards and support for the Rohingya people in Arakan so that they may be allowed to live a life of dignity and become recognised as citizens of Myanmar. Let us take ownership of our humanness and exercise our god-given attributes of mercy, compassion, beneficence, justice, truth etc and implement these in uplifting humanity.

The UN need to take urgent steps to prevent further human right abuses and pressure the Burmese regime to intervene and bring to an end the campaign of violence against the Rohingyas, before evil forces exploit the situation. The Rohingyas cannot afford to get entwined in a sadistic series of bloodshed and end up being blamed for an aggression beyond their control, as in the case of Palestine.
