Herman Mashaba - The Mayor of Johannesburg

2016-08-22 20:05

Finally Herman Mashaba is the mayor of the greatest city on the African soil. Just a few weeks and days before this coronation, it was as if South Africans could not quite make up their mind about Herman Mashaba. The ascension into such powerful role acceptably creates a clatter of emotional responses from people.

Many people despised his infuriating belligerent tone that defied national discourse.

But as days drew closer, South Africans went into deep thinking and realized that Herman Mashaba’s shortcoming notwithstanding, this mayoral position to the greatest city in Africa is his destiny. And so the whole Monday they tweeted, facebooked and watch the news in great anticipation of his election.

Amidst all the reservation there was one quality that South Africans paused at and that could not be brushed aside: Herman Mashaba’s stature as one of the greatest Black entrepreneurs this country has ever produced. That cleared up the muddy waters. And out of that realization, as if nudged by the cathartic effect, South Africans began to accept him. All power brokers to the mayoral throne gradually embraced him with broad smiles. Early on Monday Herman Mashaba was finally in the affectionate hands of one of EFF's important and powerful figures: Mbuyiseni Ndlozi. Brought smiles of acceptance. Throughout EFF was the major stumbling stone but the affectionate embrace shown that EFF is now a stepping stone to the throne. Herman Mashaba the new Mayor of Johannesburg… Rising up from the poor Hammanskraal Herman Mashaba broke through apartheid to become a great entrepreneur. He comes to the position of Mayor of Johannesburg not as a professional politician but an outsider with the conviction not for politics on its own sake but to change society.  When you browse Herman Mashaba's autobiography book called Black Like You there is one thing that stands out. It is a thick colour photo in the middle of the book. The photo is Herman Mashaba having dinner with Hillary Clinton in Robben Island. Are we seeing history in the making? As Herman Mashaba is crowned the mayor of the greatest city in the African continent  Hillary Clinton is cruising well to becoming the President of the mighty nation on earth. Herman Mashaba pursued his studies at what was then University of the North now University of Limpopo. He could not complete his studies because of student unrests and strikes:  that is students’ fights against Apartheid. After a long strike having been chased out of the University campus and back home in Hammanskraal. he was never to return to the University when the strike ended. He used that window in his life to create something bigger - Black Like Me - a company that would echo across the world In his second book, The Capitalist Crusader: Fighting Poverty through Economic Growth Herman Mashaba writes:

"South Africa’s economic trajectory is very obviously off the course. We are facing a serious crisis of poverty, unemployment and inequality. I believe I have a fair understanding of the difficulties encountered by young Black people because I have been there too, and I want to suggest some solutions to facilitate positive change in South Africa’s fortunes".

May the soul of our departed councillor  find rest.
