How expensive are these two words: "Thank You"?

2013-03-14 08:55

Like the word Please, I do not understand why Thank you seems to be by many the hardest thing to say today. Is it just not in us to give thanks whenever something good is done to us or is it a matter of contemplation or procrastination?

The former is a huge problem because it then speaks to the issue of how one was raised; while the latter is quite promising because it talks to the attitude which is something I believe can easily be worked on.

I would like to believe that I am a very well-mannered individual and for this I give thanks to those who raised me (my parents) because I believe from a very young age they contributed a great deal in teaching me basic things like acknowledging and appreciating small things I got to encounter on a daily basis. They basically taught me how to have a descent conversation not only with people older than me, but with whoever I came across and got to sit for a talk with.

However, for a long time I’ve beat myself up for not giving Thanks to the one person I believe deserved it the most. This is my High School English teacher whom I thought contributed a great deal in moulding me to be the kind of a person I am today.

Amongst all the teachers who selflessly dedicated their precious time and stood before class every day of the week, I strongly felt a need to single him out and approach him just to give thanks for without even realizing it instilling in me the man I am today.

Unfortunately, a couple of years after I matriculated he was involved in a car accident and his death beat me to it. I wasted time and I never got to thank him.

Twice I read Ben Carson’s book – Think Big and in the book he gives praise to those who played a huge role and made a tremendous impact towards the man he is today. From his mother, high school and tertiary lecturers and mentors, he saw a need and the importance of acknowledging their contribution. I read this book way after my High School English teacher past on and every time I’d open the book it made me realize how precious and short of a time we have on this planet earth. It further made me realize how important it is for us as people to learn to share this space we are given under the umbrella shielding us and the importance of embracing this space and loving one another.

I am made to strongly believe that nothing comes close to beating the words Thank you, especially when they come straight from one’s mouth.

If you do me wrong and you buy me something to apologize, if I do you good and you buy something to thank me, more than often you may find that you actually haven’t done a thing yet because none of these compare to the two words coming deep from your heart: Thank you.

Thank the teller helping you at the till. Thank that person on the other side of the line giving you information on the product you want to buy. Thank your parents for the little they have done for you. Thank your partner for being by your side everytime you have those difficulties.

Through my experience I have learned not to procrastinate anymore.

Let us all learn to acknowledge, appreciate and make known how we feel before it is too late.

Procrastination is the thief of time. As much as you are able to thank God; make it a point you are as able to thank those you live with, regardless of whether they contribute or not, in your life. We have created ourselves this bubble that we live in and this brings with it elements of arrogancy wherein we think we are better than everybody. Well, the news is that it is only a matter of time until this bubble bursts and there wouldn't be anybody to help you recover.

How good of a feeling it is when thanked by someone and you can see the meaning of it all over their face.

I fail though to understand why it is so hard for us to reciprocate this.
