How to keep going when you just want to give up

2014-03-14 05:54

The seemingly endless economic crisis, wars, terrorism, murder, rape, unemployment, AIDS… with all of this going on in the world it’s no wonder that when you look around that you’re seeing tired, worn out and fatigued people who just can’t seem to face another day or take another step forward without seeing some kind of positive result.

So just what do you do when you’re at the end of your tether and it feels like you just can’t face another minute of another day?

A duvet day or a holiday

Whether you’re mentally, emotionally, physically or spiritually fatigued, you’re still fatigued… and the solution to being fatigued is rest.

Looks that’s probably not what you wanted to hear right out of the gate, because let’s face it, you have an endless laundry list of things you have to get to and get finished… that overdue report, the laundry, getting to gym, dinner to cook, the house to clean… the list is actually endless, and even if you take a break, guess what? It will all still be there tomorrow.

However if your system caves in, you might not be there to get to all those things tomorrow.

Sometimes, when we’re totally exhausted, it’s the pure lack of energy that makes it impossible to think, makes it impossible to come up with a solution, and we need the distance from the situation in order to be able to see the wood for the trees.

Or in the words of Leonardo da Vinci:

“Every now and then go away, have a little relaxation, for when you come back to your work your judgment will be surer. Go some distance away because then the work appears smaller and more of it can be taken in at a glance and a lack of harmony and proportion is more readily seen.”

So especially if you think you don’t have the time and you absolutely cannot afford to take a rest, take one.

It’s often exactly when you think that you absolutely have to keep going that you most often need the respite.

Go on a news fast…

The papers are going to hate me for saying this, but sometimes you just have to cut the negativity out altogether.

Urban legend has it that there was an interesting experiment done a few years back where all the papers and news stations only published good news for a day – and sales dropped to 25% of normal volume.

When you look at it that way, it makes a lot of sense that papers and news stations would keep the bad news coming… that’s what sells papers after all and without papers sold the journos are all out of jobs.

For your peace of mind though, sometimes you just need to turn off the news and cut the negativity and drama out of your life… including sometimes the people that bring negativity and drama into your personal space.

Turn off the television, don’t buy the paper, listen to CDs in your car… and don’t worry: if there is a major piece of news that you need to know about, you’ll hear about it through the grapevine.

…and fill your love tanks

Once you’ve cut the negativity out, you need to start putting positivity back into your life.

In his book The Five Love Languages, author Gary Chapman speaks about love tanks which he says are kind of like a bank account… you need something in them in order to keep withdrawing.

Often when we feel flat and wasted and worn out, it’s because our tanks are empty.

What are you doing to put positivity back into your life… what refreshes, revitalises and inspires you?

Don’t beat yourself up if it doesn’t come easily at first.

For many of us who have been working non-stop, getting through all the chores that need to be done, sitting down and doing nothing can be plagued with feelings of guilt and inadequacy, but here’s the thing: it’s often only when we’re bored that we remember what we do in order to recharge.

So take some time, make some time, get bored and remember what it is that fills you up and makes you able to keep going. Then do it – and make time in your schedule to keep doing it.

Remember, this is a marathon, not a sprint… you have to conserve your energy to keep going over the long term, and that requires endurance and regular rest.

Desperate times… desperate measures

We live in a world where we have more access to information for the poorest of the poor via mobile phones than what aristocrats had in previous generations… yet we live more cloistered and cocooned lives than we ever have before.

In fact, just a little bit of digging will help you uncover a number of alternative and energy healing modalities out there today, in addition to the help that is accepted and known in the mainstream, such as coaching, counselling and therapy.

If you’re stuck, you can’t go on and you have absolutely nowhere left to turn and nothing left to lose, well then it’s time to think outside the box and try your hand at an alternative healing modality like Resonance Repatterning or Body Talk.

Yes, sometimes you can feel grottier and groggier after your first few sessions as your system clears the stuff out, but the relief is also palpable… and stepping outside the box can be the difference between being able to go on and giving up and taking your family with you in a murder suicide.
