I don't celebrate Youth Day... I commemorate it

2015-06-15 14:25

I dont celebrate youth day, I commemorate it. By commemorate, I mean to mark by observation. Much like others, I'm 100% committed to the transition of our country. So, on youth day I commemorate the anniversary of revolution with a call of remembrance in an attempt to keep alive the memory of those who fell victim to the circumstances of that fateful day, June 16th the year 1976. And by celebrate, I mean in the context of what we have come to know as "pop culture", to engage in a 'turn up'. To party the occasion away.

This day is of great social importance, and to celebrate it is to respect it. The youth will come out from different corners of the country to attend social events that will include entertainment from South African artists, in the name of celebrating youth day. In that type of environment I don't see how I can accord remembrance to our fallen heroes. The notion that this freedom has been afforded to us by the sacrifices made by the youth of 1976 is a known one, and it's true.

As today's youth, we habituated that freedom. I, myself am young and enjoy a good day or night out every now and again, and I believe there is a time and a place for everything. What I'd like to see more of on youth day, is that the youth will be taking charge. To take time to fully understand what the struggle was about, and that we may understand what is yet to be achieved by the youth of today.

So many of us, are better off than the youth of 1976, but there's no denying what still needs to be done to sustain and enhance what we have as the future of this country. The youth needs to go out there and teach to empower others, because with more empowerment comes less entitlement. It's no secret, there's been times when the previously disadvantaged have been accused of entitlement and so we need to do away with that. If we can instill in our fellow brothers and sisters the idea and believe of achieving the things they may consider impossible, then we are living upto the ideals of sacrifices made for us.

No one can help everyone, but everyone can help some one. But of course, my aspirations cannot be the same as a young girl in a 'remote area' somewhere in this country who can only so far worry about securing a water pipe in her home. Our circumstance are different, so although I don't have all the answers and means what I can do for her by attempting to instill in her mind the knowledge I have about history, and what it's afforded me and what more it can do for her as well. I can attempt to empower her, restoring an aggressive sense of confidence in her abilities to dream, aspire and further inspire.

My point is, we need to as the youth of South Africa affect change. So, it's of importance to me to strike a meaningful balance with regards to how we choose to acknowledge the events of 1976. It's important to strike that balance and educate ourselves to make a difference for this country going forward.

Tomorrow, I commemorate youth day for its historic significance and I applaud the youth of today who are doing their bit to empower others.
