I want to be Apple when I grow up

2015-01-30 11:55

Apple released its quarterly results a few days ago. According to many observers, the results cemented Apple's "top dog" position in the big league. Apart from growing its revenues by 30% in the quarter that ended in December 2014 versus same quarter a year ago, Apple generated $18 billion's worth of net profits, which got the BBC to dub the size of the earnings generated, the "the biggest ever."

It seems as though Apple is not only a "top dog" amongst analysts and investors alike, but also in brand league tables. According to the 2014 edition of Inter-brand's Best Global Brands, Apple is the world's most valuable brand. There is also speculation that Apple may have eclipsed Samsung as the biggest smart phone seller in the world. Whilst only time will tell whether this is the case or not, I must confess that it is difficult to turn a blind eye to Apple's success for the reported quarter.

For some people, this may signify the fact that Steve Jobs's spirit lives on, whilst for others, this is Tim Cook's way of putting his stamp on the Apple journey. Whilst we are all in search of meaning to attach to Apple's results, I hope that, the one narrative that I believe Apple signifies - the spirit of entrepreneurship, will not be lost. I hope that we will not forget the Apple 1 personal computer kit designed by Steve Wozniak and all the twists, turns and pivots that the three founding entrepreneurs went through and endeared, to get Apple going.

The flame of entrepreneurship should be kept alive, especially in South Africa where levels of entrepreneurial activity according to the 2013 Global Entrepreneurship Monitor are low. For those entrepreneurs who are out there hustling, keep going like the energizer bunny, you will also, one day will be like Apple.
