If winning is the yardstick surely Ronaldo is the best?

If you did not follow any of the Euro16 action and you had to look at the results you would have placed Portugal on an early plane home instead of England, Spain or Germany.

How did they do it?

I was actually wondering whether the players especially the ones from the Madrid clubs are starting to feel the effects of a very long season. Ronaldo's body did.

Not even that was enough to deter Portugal from their goal of winning their first major silverware.

If winning is the yardstick surely Ronaldo is the best?

It was once again shown that no team is guaranteed anything based on reputation, home advantage or even talent and skill.

You need to have desire, game plan and a band of hardworking brothers like Portugal, Wales, Iceland etc. showed.

Well done to the teams who reached the last four but a special pat on the back to Portugal!

Rugby

The Stormers is not going to win this year's Superrugby competition!

Now that we have that settled and in into our heads; let's talk rugby.

We are not going to talk up the title credentials of the boys from the Cape (Stormers), because we know from history what normally follows then.

Let's give credit when it is due though. Everybody is currently raving about the Lions and devastating form of the NZ teams (and rightfully so), but let us not forget what the Stormers achieved so far this season.

They just managed 2 out of 2 wins overseas and that without the experience of De Jongh, the nifty skills of Cheslin Kolbe as well as the attacking prowess of Senatla. They are all involved in the Sevens preparations for the Rio Olympic games.

This young team (with a mixture of some experience from the likes of Burger); with an inexperienced coach is surprising all and sundry and probably themselves as well. They are also a little different from the teams who played in the AC-era. I witnessed some cross kicks, inside passes and chip kicks which are not normally (of late) associated with the Stormers. That is more the Lions' thing.

There were still too many useless kicks though, but for now they are a happy camp with their fate in their own hands.

One thing the Lions will have experience of is that their conference includes teams from NZ as well of which they managed to beat the Chiefs en-route to their current position on top of the log.

The Kings were never going to stop them at this stage of the competition as this is a well-oiled machine which is running at full tilt.

I would suggest Ackermann go with another full strength squad as a win in their last game will in any case hand them a one week bye during the first round of knockouts due to their number one status.

Gary Gold (like many a Protea and England soccer team manager/coach) must be wondering what more needs to be done to kick his enormously talented squad into action. To me he looks like a man who is currently just happy to win the next game with no concern to the quality of the play or wins.

Somehow the Sharks manage to escape the cut every time while dishing the dullest and error laden rugby. Surely a team like the Blues or Waratahs would be more deserved of a place in the knockouts?

But yet again this team is one win away from qualifying.

The Bulls need this off-season to give coach Marais a real indication of where his troops are really at. Championship teams all go through a lengthy building phase, just ask the Chiefs, Waratahs and Reds.

The high scores of the NZ teams the past weekend do not bode well for the upcoming Sanzar Championship. Luckily none of it was against SA sides.

Well done to all the winning teams!
