I’m so hungry I could eat carbs

2014-08-22 10:07

I was relatively new in Cape Town and as it was my birthday, I decided to take a few cupcakes to work. Sadly, when I left for home at the end of the day only one had been eaten. “Sorry, I’m on banting”, “Sorry, I can’t have that, only proteins for me,” were the most common excuses. Seriously?!

Don’t get me wrong I'm all for looking good and going to the gym. As a matter of fact going to the gym and trying to eat healthy has become a part of my lifestyle, but c’mon, if it gets to the point where I am unable to snack on a cupcake because of the fear of developing cancer or picking up weight then it is time for me to go anyway.

A few weeks later when a bunch of colleagues and I went out on a business lunch the health topic came up when I ordered a beer and somebody else a coke. “Oh, do you know how bad that coke is for you?” a voice said across the table. “It has so much sugar in you could just as well…” and then he started rambling on about cancer and sugar and a whole lotta things that kept us from talking business.

I am not sure if this lady that ordered the coke is addicted to coke or just wanted to enjoy a cold refreshment at a cosy business lunch but it really bothered me that we as a society had become so immune to each other’s feelings that driving our own agenda was more important.

I tried to defuse the situation by talking about the deep fried wings I had enjoyed the evening before. It just fuelled the conversation. This one dude at the table was so dedicated to his high protein diet he hadn't chowed down a pizza or burger or even sipped a beer in over a year.

Surely, this life that is so incredibly difficult to figure out and understand and yet so beautiful and exciting at the same time has far more to offer us than what the scale or the mirror has to offer. . Maybe I’m just lucky, but I have never been significantly overweight and I have never been built like Arnie either, but when I go to Hudson’s on Kloof Street, I dig in, boy do I dig in. I enjoy it. I don’t slip a tower rounder every night but when I do visit the colonel I try not feel guilty about it.

I am not judging here so don’t get me wrong. It is just one of those things I don’t understand. By no means am I saying I have all the answers. I’m not trying to be Yoda. But surely, to celebrate the culinary delights of this world, like Spur onion rings, NY slice pepperoni pizzas, Gilroy’s home brew, Giovanni’s alfredo, is part of the celebration and not a funeral.
