Intercourse, nyaope, weed and rock 'n roll

Happy Valentine's

February is awareness month for healthy lifestyles, environmental health and reproductive health. In my previous article, I looked at some environmental factors that may increase one's chances of getting cancer. This time around, I will take a slightly less educational and more reflective look at how sexual intercourse and drugs are affecting our country. I won't be much of a party pooper pre valentine's. Lovers out there will be indulging, no doubt, in love making and gift exchange. Isn't it convenient that pregnancy awareness week falls on 8-14th February and STIs/condom awareness week on 10-16th this year?

Pregnancy Awareness

All those born in November, raise your hands. We are products of love, or so we would like to believe. We were conceived in February and some specifically on valentine's day. In a perfect world, parents make plans and start a family. They make sure they are financially stable and can put a roof over their babies' heads. Ideal parents space their pregnancies well and ensure that kids are not too frequent. This allows them enough savings for their kids. We live in a real world though. Some are single parents, others have adopted kids. During this month, let's remember that some pregnancy-related complications are preventable. We also need to address teenage pregnancies and discourage women starting families at an advanced maternal age.

This valentine's day, one needs to ask relevant questions. While you are still drunk in love, you probably won't be rational. Let me ask those questions on your behalf:

Will you be engaging in sexual intercourse?

Has your partner been recently treated for an STI?

Do you have multiple sex partners?

Are you using protection?

Have you and your partner taken an HIV test together?

Are you on birth control/contraception? (women)

Are you comfortable with morning-after pills? (women)

Do you believe in abortion?

Are you planning to fall pregnant? (women)

Have you discussed your wishes with your partner?

Where do you see your relationship in 5 years?

The Addictive Lifestyle

Just as some are preparing for valentines, others are showing us how deep their bond is. Some have proven to us that family is not only blood, but true family shares blood, literally. It takes the "gaz'lam" (my blood) statement to new heights. I'm referring to the new nyaope bluetooth trend. Such bravery, mixed with stupidity! I can only assume that those guys can go to the ends of the earth for each other. I'm sure some wish to have friends like those. It's funny how their blood is compatible, so they think. Who can stop them? They are at an extremely high risk of bloodborne infections and sepsis. If the government were to supply them with cleaning and sterilizing swabs, syringes and needles, the general public would still find it ridiculous! Better the devil you know, perhaps?

Let's address the root cause of this problem, some will say. Drug abuse, gangsterism, unemployment, criminality. There are just so many problems linked to drugs, as causative factors or end products. We are already having challenges with rehabilitating other drug addicts. Rural provinces don't seem to have enough resources to assist with alcoholism as it is. Mr President, we have a problem!

Legalize it?

It seems some people don't think the high you get from being in love is enough. How could it be? Hearts get broken and life goes on. Movies that portray stoners got my brother and I laughing this December. "Far out dude". People are still divided on the issue of legalizing marijuana. It is a drug ,in the eyes of some, just as bad as cocaine and nyaope. Others approve it for medicinal purposes with pharmaceutical regulations. We also have a group that believes that it should be free for all. Now why would our country, the whole world in fact, argue over this herb? What's so special about it?

The best and funniest argument I saw on Facebook was that comparing marijuana to alcohol. It went something like this: there are accidents caused by drunks, violent crimes and other violations; the only thing you should worry about with stoners is keeping your refrigerator locked because they will raid it. Some Europeans claim there are no side effects from marijuana. A South Africa doctor working in casualty or the psychiatric unit will tell you otherwise. We are seeing a lot of substance-induced psychosis linked to marijuana in young black males. In weed's defense, some will tell you that such individuals just had a genetic predisposition.

They say a glass of red wine is good for your health right? Occasional drinkers will tell you how safe alcohol is in moderation. I think we are talking about self-control here. We get people who drink till they pass out. Some are at taverns, shebeens and traditional beer spots all day for almost the whole week. Too much of everything is not good for you, right? It would be no surprise that if one smoked marijuana excessively and persistently, it would cause some undesired effects besides the munchies. Apples and oranges that we are comparing? I think not.

A Healthy Lifestyle

The message stays the same: eat plenty of fruit and vegetables, drink water, eat a balanced diet and exercise. One more ingredient missing: music. If you like music as much as I do, you will agree with me if I told you that you can have a playlist for all life events. Allow me to share some lyrics from AC/DC's "Let There Be Rock":

"In the beginning

Back in nineteen fifty five

Man didn't know about a rock 'n' roll show

And all that jive

The white man had the smoltz

The black man had the blues

No one knew what they was gonna do

But Tchaikovsky had the news

He said

Let there be sound, and there was sound

Let there be light, and there was light

Let there be drums, and there was drums

Let there be guitar, and there was guitar

Let there be rock

And it came to pass

That rock 'n' roll was born

All across the land every rockin' band

Was blowing up a storm"
