IRAQ: Failed U.S. Policy

2014-06-17 19:52

The current situation in Iraq is an indication of a complete failure of the American government’s strategy in Iraq.

The chaotic conditions in Iraq is the direct outcome of the disastrous US led military intervention in 2003, which disrupted the country, caused further divisions and put in control a corrupt and a deceptive government.

The war of aggression and the illegal invasion of Iraq led by former President George Bush and his allies was not a war on terror or to bring democracy to Iraq, but it was to destabilise Iraq.

Bush and his allies are responsible for ruining Iraq and for a war that has killed thousands of innocent women, children and men and also for displacing millions of Iraqis.

Bush and Tony Blair repeatedly lied to the world about Iraq and Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD).

Bush, Blair and their partners should be held accountable at the International Criminal Court (ICC) for violations of international humanitarian laws.

Many human rights law experts believe there is definitely a case for an investigation by the ICC for war crimes committed in Iraq.

American leaders need to re-visit and re-think their foreign policies and their ambitions for geopolitical domination. Intellectuals like Noam Chomsky have slammed and criticised US foreign policies.

Likewise, their policy of subtly and shrewdly eliminating non-cooperative governments in the Middle-East and other parts of the globe should stop immediately.

Moreover, President Barack Obama should refrain from any military action or intervention in Iraq. Although the violence is alarming, the people of Iraq don’t need any military interference as it can only make matters worse and further inflame the sectarian tensions.

The corrupt and unrepresentative puppet government of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki is the cause of the current situation of total confusion in Iraq. Maliki, a radical sectarian, fuelled the uprising by centralizing power within his own circle.

The present situation needs to be controlled immediately as sectarian strife and civil wars can spiral out of control very quickly.

All political forces in Iraq should deal with the deteriorating situation with wisdom in order to save lives and to achieve national reconciliation, co-existence and a truly representative government inclusive of all sectors and free of US and other foreign intervention.
