Is Fracturing A Blessing From God?

2012-05-31 11:08

Due to South Africa winning the right to host the larger share of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) telescope and the proposed hydraulic fracturing in the Karoo, the Karoo is making news headlines.

In this regard I would like to share my view on the proposed fracking since Energy Minister Dipuo Peters told Members of Parliament that the shale gas under the Karoo is a blessing from God. (18 May, News24).

To quote Peters: “It would be wrong for us to not use the resources that God left us with. This is a blessing that God gives us, and we need to exploit for the benefit of the people”.

Human beings are viewed as Almighty’s vicegerents on Earth, hence its humankind’s responsibility to protect the environment and natural resources. The earth’s resources are available for our use, but these gifts come with certain ethical restraints imposed on them. We may use them to meet our needs, but only in a way that does not upset the natural and ecological balance.

During the recent concluded COP 17 conference held in South Africa, I participated in some of the COP 17 alternative events also known as the People’s Space at the Howard College campus of the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

The different activists from around the globe presented some real eye opening issues affecting animals, birds, humans and the environment caused by individual and corporate business greed and selfishness.

The one that really caught my attention was a presentation on hydraulic fracturing, producing oil from shale.

Every South African citizen should be concerned about the proposed shale gas fracturing (fracking) in the Karoo.

Fracking is an extremely hazardous process of extracting oil and gas from the ground. Producing oil from shale has a devastating effect on agricultural land, requires huge amount of fresh water and can cause water and air pollution. It is an extremely risky and very dangerous method of oil extraction that can cause severe damage to the environment and is extremely hazardous to the well-being of animals and humans.

In order to protect the environment, natural resources like water and the scenic majestic mountain passes, fauna and flora, fruit and ostrich farms and the desert stretches of the Karoo, the anti fracking call made by Treasure the Karoo Action Group (TKAG) should be supported by every conscience driven individual.

Furthermore, we need to educate our young generation about environmental degradation of climate change. We need to reinforce the values of re-use, reduce, recycle and conserve in them.

Climate breakdown is destroying the lives of millions of people especially the ordinary people on the ground. The people who experience the worst consequences are subsistence farmers, fishers, workers, the poor, the unemployed and in particular women within these groups.

As ordinary citizens let’s not wait or rely on governments, global leaders or conferences to make a difference. It’s time for a change in our own approach towards the environment. Let’s walk the talk and focus on the small and practical things we can all do every day to protect the environment. Buy environmentally-friendly products, eat less meat, stop eating unsustainably-caught seafood, start an organic vegetable garden, drive vehicles responsibly, save paper, water and electricity and donate towards conservation projects.
