Is “Social Media” killing you?

Zareef Minty: Is social media killing you?

Social Media has changed the way the world functions, it is crazy to think that a person who lives 10 000 km away can have a relationship with another person as if they are neighbours. Skype, FaceTime and other video calling applications have paved the way to a more convenient lifestyle. Social Media just like everything else has its pro’s and con’s; we no longer have to attend 5-6 business meetings in different towns and cities now we can sit in the comfort of our homes or offices without any travelling.

We can have phenomenal relationships with our friends and family around the world which before wasn’t really available to us. We can support various charitable organisations worldwide as well as pledge to aid various human rights initiatives. Social Media has changed the lives of millions of people; it has liberated and educated a vast number. However, just as the sun rises on social media, the sun has to set on it too.

My worry is not to allow social media to control us, especially the youth of this country and that occurs when Social Media has a slot in our direct lifestyle. My biggest fear for us as young people when it comes to this global communication phenomenon is actually getting lost in it so deeply that we end up living this over the phone or over the IPAD lifestyle.

I plan to really limit my time on social media; don’t get me wrong, social media can inspire millions of people. The people you find on social media sites worldwide inspire me take Instagram for example, I follow Manny Khoshbin very closely, his quotes and pictures of his rise to success is something that motivates me greatly. This is all great for inspirational purposes but what most of us as young people struggle with is falling into that rather large web where we are living on social media and dying in real life and by that I mean we are cutting into our own valuable time to achieve our successes.

The most successful people use social media and television sparingly, I mean if we look at the saying about Lamborghini’s, where they say you will never see a Lamborghini TV advert because they know that the people who usually buy Lamborghini’s are not watching TV.

I am turning 21 next year and I have to admit my goals are on the top of my mind. We all need to do amazing things but we need to be wary of our usage of social media. Use social media to improve your opportunities and let it open doors for you. Don’t end up getting comfortable in the rather warm house of Social Media because before you know it your opportunities have passed and so has your time.

We are too young to worry but we are too old to be complacent.
