Is South Africa celebrating fake democracy ?

2016-04-11 12:22

On the 27th of April South Africa will celebrate freedom day. It is true that our democracy has brought some positive changes into the manner in which our country is govern. Unfortunately . Little did we taught that democracy can be manipulated and corrupted. We taught that it was a pure thing.

The judgement of the constitutional court against president Jacob Zuma to repay some of the money that was used for non-security upgrade at his Nkandla homestead has proven that our democracy is working and nobody is above the law. Democracy has spoken through the constitutional court and why Zuma is still a president ?

After this judgement many South Africans and ANC members expressed their discontent with the president and they have requested that he must step down as the president of the Republic of South Africa. Opposition parties have tried unsuccessful for his impeachment in parliament.

If comments on social networks and complains about the president on mass media were votes, we could have read his political obituary a long time ago.

On his response the ANC general secretary Gwede Mantashe said "only the ANC branches can remove president Zuma". He further mention that the ANC must convene a special Congress and the branches will decide on that congress. During the ANC media conference he also said the ANC is using its majority to their advantage (abusing) in parliament to defend the impeachment on the president and that is democracy and any other party can do it. This is a pure manipulation of democracy.

Who is the majority ? The understanding is that the ANC was not only voted by ANC branches and its members in parliament but it was voted by the majority of South Africans who are not card caring ANC members. Few ANC delegates cannot decide for the majority of South Africans. What kind of democracy is that ?

President Jacob Zuma is no longer a democratically elected president. His apology was an admission of guilty that he broke the oath of his office. Our democracy does not have proper systems in place to remove him before the national elections. The best thing the ANC must do now is to call a public referendum to decide on whether the majority of South Africans they still want him to continue to be the president or not for the sake of democracy.

If our democracy exist surely there must be a democratically way of removing him from office. However if it is only the ANC branches who can unseat him, than South Africa is celebrating a fake democracy.
