It's My Party and I'll Cry if I Want To

2016-04-17 08:15

Everyone has at least one of those friends. You know the one who doesn’t know when it’s just enough? When the party is over and they now need to leave? When the place is in a mess and its time to start the clean up? The one who just doesn’t read the signs. You have locked the doors, thrown the dog out and have lamented the day you have tomorrow and how much there is to still do. You have looked around the room and noted out loud the devastation, and still he simply doesn’t leave. We all have at least one of those friends. Ours is President Jacob Zuma.

It’s actually becoming a bit tiresome now. Day by day with the man not leaving, so he is taking the fun out of the whole situation. Which is so unfair. Given what he has done to the place, the least he could do is exit in order to allow us a time to get our house in order.

And make no mistake, it’s been a riot. He brought everything he had to the party. He was the life and soul. Dance moves like none other, an infectious laugh and a hit with the woman. He was dangerous and funny and good to his friends. On paper he definitely made the A Invite List.

But, he has single handedly (okay, with a bit of help from his friends) turned the South African Parliament into a global chaotic sensation (and not in a good way). He reduced the place to junk and has contaminated the entire house with corruption and with dishonesty. He is well under the influence and we need to remove his keys before he hurts not only himself but everyone around him (more than he has already done). He cannot be allowed to drive anything. Let alone a country for God’s sake. The man is a danger.

And everyone is saying so. There is hardly an organization left to still tell him and his puppeteers that the party is over. From South African religious leaders, to ANC elders, from current ANC members to every man and woman in the country, there is not a body with credibility who will endorse him.

One almost feels sorry for the moms of the ANC Woman’s League who have chosen to “Stand by their man.” No one wants to believe what is so obvious. I hear that. But it’s not good parenting. And its certainly not responsible behavior. They need to find a way to change their minds. Because he will go and in the wisdom of time they will not be judged favorably. They are standing on the wrong side of South African history and it will not do them any good.

Nor the NEC who have proven themselves to be as bad as the President himself. They have had ample opportunity to do the right thing. And each time they chose to encourage the President to stay at the party, to have another drink and have laughed at his now very stale jokes.

One gets the sense that given the state he and his friends are in that they have no idea what they are saying. This weekend in Port Elizabeth saw the man stating, " A vote for the ANC is vote for a united, non-racial, democratic, non sexist and prosperous South Africa. It is a vote for the Constitution of the Republic." Seriously? How does he say that with no sense of irony. What's next, drunk texting?

The party was fun. No arguing that. Cant say I have ever enjoyed politics as much as than that served by the ANC. But the place is a mess. And both the President and the NEC need to go home wherever that might be, so that South Africans can start the real work of cleaning up the place.
