Jacques Kallis the GOAT

2013-12-29 20:07

December 2013 seems to be the month we bid farewell to world icons.

First it was the greatest statesman to grace our beautiful land and now it is to the greatest cricketer of all time. Jacques Kallis is the GOAT of cricket regardless of what the Aussies (Bradman) or Indians (Tendukar) have to say. Yes, he is the Greatest Of All Time and this statement has nothing to do with patriotism; the stats speak for themselves.

Cricket is a sport that has 3 main disciplines; batting, bowling and fielding. In order to be the greatest one needs to be rated according to these disciplines and its a fact that no one stands near Kallis in this regard. This is not my opinion this is proven by his statistics over his amazing career.

In 166 test matches Kallis has amassed 13289 the third highest in the history of the game. 292 wickets which leaves him in the top 30 of all time which is no small feat, and 200 catches - only Dravid caught more than him. A clear indication of the value Kallis added to the gentleman's game, all in all he was involved in 491 dismissals in test cricket. This on top of the runs he scored. His contribution surpasses all those who have come before him and those who are his peers.

The mere fact that his individual performances rank up the with the best specialist in each disciplines, atones to his greatness. Never in the history of the game has any player held as much influence in a test match as Jacques Kallis. A true cricketer in every sense of the word, he was not an all-rounder in my eyes, as an all-rounder is someone who is merely capable of adequately performing all the disciplines. Kallis was more than that; adequate is an understatement on the superlative skill he illustrated in each discipline.

It will take a very special player to fill the boots of this legend, until then two very excellent bowling and batting specialists will try fill the void (operative work being "try"). The problem being that only one player retired. Unless we're granted permission to make substitutions, we are going to have a hard time filling this massive void.

In closing, I would like to salute the great Jacques Kallis, the greatest player in the history of the game. For all the great memories that you provided us. For all the rescue missions you pulled of when the top order collapsed, for the beautiful display of textbook batting. Who can forget your assault on the batsmen with the ball in hand or your safe pair of hands in the slip cordon? We will miss you even the idiots who used to question your place in the Proteas team. We will miss you.

PS: no one played the cover drive better than you and the extra 3 second pose made it even more beautiful. I am privileged to have watched you play the gentleman's game.
