Jobs in the UK and abroad blossom for Saffers

2017-03-20 12:37

South Africans have sought-after skills that are needed both abroad and in the UK.

South Africans needed!

That is the message delivered by Adzuna in South Africa and the UK when analysing over 1,000,000 job openings in both countries. In the UK alone, over 4,000 positions in various industries call specifically for South Africans or experience in South Africa.

Notably, while many would expect the salary average to be similar to that of the national average in the UK (£33,066), positions for South Africans are averaging 17% higher (£38,642), mainly based off the highly paid roles at the top end of the scale. These include roles such as a Corporate M&A Partner paying £88,324 per annum. About 5% of the jobs for South Africans are such senior roles and are clearly for hard-to-find skills in IT, engineering, finance and law that employers in the UK are looking abroad to fill. Even with tough immigration laws, somehow these positions have to be filled with the right skills, wherever they may be from.

On the other end of the spectrum, waiters earn just over £10 000. Thereafter follow many positions in the hospitality sector, as well as back office and administrative vacancies requiring SA skills. Lots of job listings in construction, engineering projects and similar based in the UK, Africa and the Middle East also call for South Africans to apply.

Few positions ask for Afrikaans and English voice-overs from South Africans. More common are roles at entrepreneurial and startup companies that look for skilled people and offer Saffers an entry into the UK job market. Design and digital positions are closely related and also in abundance.

Interestingly, the University of Stellenbosch was looking for a new Dean of the Law Faculty, just in case anyone is interested!
