JOBURG IS NO LONGER A WORLD CLASS AFRICAN CITY

2016-10-11 12:46

It was not called the city of gold for nothing, but for its astonishing look. The streets, walls, buildings and people of Johannesburg must reflect that this is Johannesburg. Today it is a home to millions of documented and undocumented immigrants who have been blamed for polluting the city.

Johannesburg sits on the world's largest gold deposit and it is the richest province in the country. The city used to be known for having decent restaurants and exclusive fashion boutique. They all vacated ,assumption is that it was no longer a decent business destination. multinational companies and corporates used to have headquarters in the CBD and they also vacated.

The mighty Carlton Centre was the pride of the city and it attracted a lot of customers a day. That also increased business opportunities on small street, due to passer-by who are heading to tallest building in Johannesburg.

There are no public toilets and waste bins in the city. To use ablution service you must go to the taxi rank and restaurants, where you pay a small fee or buy something at the restaurant. Parking is also a major concern, it's proximity is not closer to our destination. It is not easy to find a parking spot and yet, you have to pay for it. Paying for parking also does not guarantee the safety of your car or items inside the car.

Johannesburg Metro Police must clean the city of all illegal activities and refrain from conducting roadblocks during peak hours on free way which leads to unnecessary traffic congestions. One of their duties is to easy and make traffic flow easily - not to cause unnecessary delays. Other by laws must be enforced on top of the traffic regulation, which is seen as the revenue generation for Joburg City.

Hawkers must receive the share of the blame for polluting and degrading our city into nothing. According to the cities informal trading policy, informal trading must be conducted in a designated place. The city must allocate a designated place for informal trading.

The infrastructure is dilapidated and this is evident from running sewerage and dysfunctional traffic lights which causes unnecessary traffic congestions. Crime is worse, there is day light robbery and city dwellers have accustomed to it, in such a point that even if you cry for help they continue with their daily activities as if nothing happened.

Areas surrounding Joburg , like Julie's, Malvern , Hilbrow are also in the dire situation. It should be remembered that these places used to be the best suburbs for residential. It all faded away in our mist. Road signs are not replaced as well as street names have also faded. You cannot tell which street is one way or a two way. Taxi drivers are making it difficult for every other driver to drive in Jozi as they drive recklessly. There are mini taxi ranks even on a public road or a parking place.

The city of Joburg should not be blamed alone but every person and business that is not making an effort to keep the city clean and as a perfect business destination. Every title deed holder must honour the ink written on it by cutting the trees, maintaining their buildings and also pay the rates to assist the city to bring Joburg into its former glory.

Municipal By laws must be amended and implemented to deal with abandoned and hijacked buildings which are used as criminal havens and where illegal and criminal activities are taking place. The City infrastructural renewal Programme must produce tangible results in our life time.

Johannesburg has a lot of economic activities which contribute to the GDP of the country. Townships surrounding the city are painting a different picture, in fact there is no evidence that the community have benefited from the cities economy. There is still a high level of poverty and unemployment. Previously, mines surrounding the city also failed to uplift the socio-economic conditions of the the cities dwellers.

The city must treat all its dwellers equal and with respect they deserve, when a sewerage pipe burst in Johannesburg North, it must be treated with same urgency as in the South.

The advent of shopping malls in township and improved transport system has also added to challenges experienced by the city. History will judge all of us for failing to preserve such a once state of the art African City.
