June is Youth Month - A Message to the Youth

2014-06-11 12:35

In the teachings of Battista Mondin, the renowned Professor who once was the Chairman of the hallowed and highly respected Anthropology School at the Pontifical Urban University in Rome, human beings are a bundle of possibilities for greatness. He is not the first to pronouce this. He is following on the humanistic path charted in ancient Greece by Protagoras. Protagoras viewed the human being as the measure of all possibilities. Martin Heidegger, the German philosopher incorporated this teaching in his philosophy, which is more of an anthropological metaphysics, when he realized that the death of man is the end of all possibilities.

This teaching, with the birth of psychology in 1879, and the emergence of motivational speakers, has been towed and evengelized across the world.

This philosophical expression, to my understanding, captures the spiritual essence of human beings. This for me is because the human individual possesses in himself or herself the majestic immensity and sovereign infinity of the universe, if his or her unrully passions are controlled. Our human comportment  summarizes the universe. And the human society that we create and participate reflects this - it becomes an elevated arena of all that is good and beautiful. In this regard every imaginative creation falls within grasps. We are capable of transcending the depths and heights of innovation. Innovation is about imaginative creation of all what is greatness and worth.

But this great being - the human, on the other hand is capable of incredible crudity. In spite of his or her fair capabilities and greatness, this human is equally capable of the obverse and all that is ugly. If he fails to obey the laws that governs human orbits, thinking he can do as he likes then he can become a worst cold reptile crawling and twisting on the mud. He could simply matriculate into a social wolf to his/her fellow human beings.

In South Africa the Youth, that major faculty of humans that should be positively driving the dynamics of social evolution, have become nothing but fractured, dysfunctional entities ever-on the brink of exploding; incinerating each other, and ripping the social fabric.

The alarming abuse of alcohol in this country has been reported to the world by the South African Medical Journal, volume 102, and Number 7 – 2012: “In South Africa harmful alcohol use is of particular concern, with implications for violence, transport-related accidents and fatalities, homicide, suicide and unintentional deaths. Alcohol use among South Africans – mainly binge drinking – is reported to be among the highest globally”.

Alcoholism among youth is a particular concern, “so many of whom lead socially and economically deprived lives”.

Our Youth out-drink and out-consume alcohol more than any nation on earth.

According to World Health Organization (WHO) report released in 2011 South Africa is currently leading - it is in position number 1 when coming to alcohol drinking; meaning we are a nation of drunkards.

Alcohol converts the mind into jelly and it makes it impossible for this great human being to soar in the skies. Because he has lost the ontological reason for existence.

Alcohol and other easy pleasures have devastated the mental universe of our youth; our youth have been sucked into a vortex of negativity.  Their genetic blueprint have been re-tooled and rewired.  And liberation from such chains is almost impossible. This is because the conquest of a community’s epistemology means a total control of its perceptual faculties, value system, and sources of psycho-social legitimacy.

The behavior and conduct of our youth, in townships, suburbs and villages are taking our country to Golgotha to be crucified among thieves, and brigands.

So as June is dubbed the Youth Month in South Africa I am appealing for the youth of this country to develop self discipline and integrity. Self -discipline is the ability to control your feelings, emotions, desires and behaviour. It is about turning down immediate easy pleasures and instant on-the-spot cheap gratification in favour of gaining greater lasting satisfaction and true personal worth.

How I wish that people would pay heed.
