Just Start!

2015-08-06 11:38

The most difficult stage for most people when it comes to carrying out any activity is getting started. Having a picture or vision of where you want to head is all good and proper but if you don't start then you will not go anywhere.

A rallying call which I have followed in my own life in all domains i.e. relationships, career, business is, "Whoever watches the wind will not plant; whoever looks at the clouds will not reap." These words were spoken by one of the wisest men to walk this earth- King Solomon.

Failure or hesitation to start is almost always premised on one waiting for perfect conditions. There will always be many excuses which you and I can come up with in order to justify our not starting out on what we are meant to.  I'm too old, I'm too young, I'm X race, I'm a man, I'm a woman, I'm from such and such a country...excuses excuses excuses. Just start! Nike was on to an important principle when they developed the tagline "Just do it!"

Being a writer, I used to pen so many different articles on different topics but I used to hesitate putting my work online because of fear of whether there would be a response from the readers. The day I made the decision to just start publishing regardless of whether only 1 or 2 people read my articles is the day I liberated myself.

Had I not started I would not have managed to put in the hours towards my 10,000 hours of writing and I would not have managed to sharpen my writing ability. Earlier I was looking at one of the first articles I posted on this platform where I am a contributor  and I was humbled by the growth in the number of views on the articles I have been publishing.

Some of the first articles had less than 200 views but I was spurred on not because of the number of views but because of the ability to share my perspectives to a wider audience. Previously I was in somewhat of a comfort zone when I just focused on writing on my personal blog. Getting to a place where article views are at times beyond the 5,000 mark, I celebrate just starting!

My wife recently started a business venture which initially she didn't think there was much potential in pursuing. The power of starting lies in the "It is possible" outlook which one develops. As simple and as subtle as the difference can seem between thinking 'it cannot be done' and 'it can be done', you will never know whether it is possible or not if you don't start. In starting with producing her first merchandise and selling it, my wife opened up the 'it can be done' door...and the rest is history. Watch the space for a new global brand which will be hitting the fashion world soon!

"The graveyard is the richest place on earth, because it is here that you will find all the hopes and dreams that were never fulfilled, the books that were never written, the songs that were never sung, the inventions that were never shared, the cures that were never discovered, all because someone was too afraid to take that first step, keep with the problem or determined to carry out their dream." (Les Brown)

What is it you've been putting aside or postponing? I implore you to just start! Next time you are hesitant to start just think of this acronym I coined;
