KP24 the Maverick

2014-02-05 12:51

It is with a sad heart, that I write this article on one of my favourite sport stars that I love to hate.  Yes I hate Kevin Pietersen but I loved watching him play. A true genius, a legend, a maverick.

My envy towards KP is due to him leaving our shores and going to England to play for those stupid poms and I still believe his exodus was due to him being poached by Clive Rice rather than the excuse of transformation/racial quotas. Before you blow your top of KP left in 1999 after Nasser Hussian advised him to secure a county contract and the mere fact that Greame Smith, AB De Villiers and  Jacques Rudolf  made their début at a relatively young age prior to his début with England, indicates that he would have gotten his chance had he stayed. His decision to abandon South Africa has always left me with a sour taste that led me to despise the man I still call a traitor.

I still remember vividly his first tour of South Africa, I like so many Sans waited with anticipation. Finally the traitor had come back to our shores and it was time for revenge. Prior to his arrival, I had branded him all kinds of names and lambasted his technique and batting ability. Concluded that he was a mediocre cricketer who could have only made it in England!

Kevin being the rebel that he is, threw the script away and decided to write his own. It was supposed to be case of a few broken ribs, toes and ducks - golden ones I might add. yet it turn into the Kevin Pietersen show, sure we beat England 4-1 but we did not care about that, we wanted revenge! but KP denied us that revenge scoring 454 over five innings , instead he made us respect him. It is safe to say after that series my love/hate relationship with KP started.

I hated his guts, yet as a true fan of the game I couldn't help but love his talent and talented he was. I have yet to see anyone impose himself on bowlers the way KP did it. He literally could win a Test in a session or a T20 in the blink of an eye, he was the kind of batsman that as the opposition you knew you're not out the woods until you have dismissed him.  The left side of my heart loathed him wished he would get a duck or broken rib or something, yet the right side smiled in anticipation of him showing his prowess.

As much as I hated him and wished all kinds of misfortunes on him, today I mourn his absence from the cricket scene. I hope the ECB know what they are doing KP deserves better, for all his short comings, his contributions where well worth it. My heart is filled with sadness, love him or hate him he is a great cricket and the only player that could help my mind imagine the prowess of the great legend Sir Viv Richards. I say farewell good ol' foe it was great while it lasted.

when does the IPL start?
