Let 2016 be a year of good governance, rule of law, accountability

2015-12-28 20:09

As they say, time and tide wait for no man. Can you believe 2015 is about to come to an End.

As I watch each year go by, I reflect upon the past year, my age and my purpose in life and I ask myself, what preparation I am making for my final destination, the grave. What constructive and progressive difference am I making in the lives of others?

We all need to do some self – reflection. Are we concentrating and spending our energies and resources on the correct things? Are we making a positive difference in the lives of others and in the choices and decisions we make? Are our social interactions and financial dealings ethical, fair and honest? What inheritance, gift or gratitude (legacy) will we leave behind in the world, after we die?

Have we ever thought of what kind of legacy we will be leaving behind to the world and humanity? How will our legacy contribute to a better world? Leaving behind a good legacy is the best inheritance we can donate to the world.

The Prophet Muhammed (PBUH) said: “No father can give a child anything better than good manners.” (Tirmidhee).

As parents, guardians, leaders and teachers, the minimum and greatest legacy we can leave behind is to teach our children and students the thirty universal human values. (http://www.un.org/en/universal-declaration-human-rights/)

This coming new year, let’s we all resolve to become active citizens and commit to transforming our country into a place of respect, good governance, rule of law, accountability, transparency, justice and equality. Let’s we resolve to reach out to someone in need, look for opportunities to empower others and use our time and resources well. Let’s build and practice on our universal human values.

As this year comes to an end and we are getting ready to usher in the new year, we see an even more urgent need to raise our voices to end war and occupation, hold war criminals accountable, stop drone wars and extrajudicial murders, close Guantanamo Bay prison in Cuba, and to stop the big game that is being played out in the Middle East between the United States of America, Britain, France, Russia, Israel and some Arab states, resulting in millions of human beings being displaced, hurt and killed.

As this year draws to a close, I wish an end to all the inequalities, imbalances and unemployment and poverty challenges and that 2016 bring peace and prosperity for all.
