Let god love Science

2012-05-21 08:09

I constantly have to be on my guard when on a lunch time walk in Government Avenue: Not from thieves, but from ideological muggers that prowl the streets of Cape Town to push their Stone Age ideas.

"God loves you," they assert.

"Really, does he, she, it, or they - creator of universe - take the time out from whatever it is that gods do to care about me?"

That's when their eye glass over and they take a breath before that payoff line: "The bible says..."

Now I don't mind them invoking that, but surely it's not too much to ask that they actually read the bible before using it as support for what is already a weak argument.

Their god destroyed everyone in Sodom, including women and children, because they were disobedient - Genesis 19 - but didn't mind Lot offering his virgin daughters for sex.

And remember that children who curse their parents should be killed (Exodus 21) and all the ways you can die if you commit sexual transgressions (Leviticus 20). God loves making rules about sex, it's very close to him/her.

"No, but that's the Old testament, we have the New testament."

As if the Old testament is not part of the bible, after all, it's got all the good stuff about paying tithing.

It's not my intention to painfully illustrate all the contradictions and inaccuracies in the good book that should come with a PG 13 parental advisory for explicit content, but if people are going to use it to support their arguments, they should have read it.

The bible is filled with so many examples of the "unlove" of God that can't help but confirm that religion is a fraud at best, and it is only through the grace of enlightened people who believe in free thought and science that dangerous ideas like those found in the bible are allowed in society.

In fact, one cannot guarantee that if those nuts that believed in sky men who fathered themselves, died and resurrected were in charge, that they would be as open minded as the rest of us. Galileo and Copernicus come to mind.

As does child abuse, slavery, racism, sexism, war, genocide - all endorsed in the bible.

Religion cripples progress in society and by continuing to tread lightly around ridiculous, fraudulent ideas because it will offend a deluded group continues to hamstring forward movement.

Even in our modern era, religious groups endorsed "witch hunts", "separation of races", objected to organ transplant on the grounds that God had not authorized it. They continue to protest against gay rights, and obsess about women's sexual  emancipation.

The time has come that we put religion on the same shelf with dragons, fairies and Santa Clause. It's the only way we can free ourselves to pursue new areas of research like stem cells to create custom organs, human-computer hybrid technology, the search for extraterrestrial intelligence, and ultimately a connected, better, more equitable world.
