Let's learn from the German post-school system

2016-01-12 20:18

In Germany, only 20% of matriculants go to university. The rest go to technical colleges and apprenticeships. Today Germany is dominating the world with companies like Volkswagen, Allianz, Mercedes Benz, BMW, Siemens whom are amongst the top 20 in revenue. I think if we are serious about TVET colleges in this country we need to stop this thing of classifying them, where you find that those with a "B" are expected in university, those with a "D" in technikons and then lastly those with a "H" in TVET colleges. That structure of a matric certificate somehow must be changed because now it makes it as if certain places are meant for certain people. The colleges must also be professionalized with proper admission points and a detailed prospectus.

Also I think we need movies about technical colleges and the careers they produce. Believe it or not, those American movies where a father of the family in the movie appears in a white shirt, black pants, drives to the office where the action takes place. Those movies influence how the youth views education, relationships, family, love, careers and dreams. I think we must have movies now where family breadwinners kissing their kids wearing a overall getting ready to go to work in a factory not a office.

The reality is that for every doctor you need nurses and first aid personnel. For every engineer you need a mechanic and 8 artisans. For every maritime specialist you need a supply chain manager, diesel mechanic, oil & coal specialists. You are spoilt of choice and guaranteed employment. No man things must change

Dont get me wrong, I'm not saying people must not go to university. Black people are still under represented in university and in professions like law, psychology, accounting, economics and academia. But the reality is that the unemployed black graduates who come from that sector is shocking compared to their white counterparts whom go to university with a plan in place already on what they gonna do afterwards. All I'm saying is lets be conscious of the structure of our economy like Germany and take our country serious.
