Let’s rock the boat!

2015-12-31 20:43

As South Africans we are once again approaching a new year! The past is gone. The future lies ahead... The question is what will it hold?

We are all rowing in a boat with the name of South Africa. The sea on which the boat floats is a stormy one... It’s a storm that is raging with unpredictability. It’s a storm that is scary. It’s a storm over which we don’t have ultimate control, except by raising our voices in protest. It’s a storm that leaves us with emotions of despair and negativity.

Still we have to keep rowing. We don’t have a choice. Some of us will ultimately decide to leave the boat called South Africa. Others don’t have that option. We have to do our best with what we have...

Is there any hope at all? As the saying goes, “The show ain’t over till it’s over...” We still have control over the way we approach our problems. I believe there’s a lot we can do.

First of all we don’t have to accept everything politicians do and say. We need to think for ourselves. Furthermore we need to insist on accountability of our leaders. We need to demand that they act responsibly. One way of ensuring accountability is by the way we cast our vote. If politicians don’t shape up, it’s time to look for new leaders. Those in power positions can’t expect to be kept in power if they don’t perform positively. They have to accept that the voters expect them to act in their best interest.

Right now that is not happening. A lot of us are disillusioned by those that are supposed to lead us...

Therefore I believe that we need to rethink our strategy. We can’t keep voting people into power if they don’t deserve it. It’s time to reconsider who we choose to lead us. We can control our circumstances by denying those who abuse power, the chance to carry on doing it.

How many of the promises that those in leadership positions have made, have been fulfilled? How has the people of South Africa benefited by the corruption, the lies and deceit? It’s time to face the music. The curtain must drop! It is time for a new chapter…

The only way to start a new chapter is by writing it ourselves. We need to take ownership of our circumstances. We need to acknowledge the fact that things will carry on like this, if we don’t do something ourselves.

The people of South Africa are fed up. We’ve had it! Things can’t carry on the way they currently do. We need change. In 2015 the Nkandla issue was the one thing that should have made us realize that we deserve better. Not just for us, but for future generations to come.

Politicians in South Africa need to be made aware that we want something better. The only way to do that is by voting others into power. . We need to rock the boat…
